Cruz tests the limits of conservatism in his run for president
Washington Post ^ | March 23, 2015 | By Dan Balz

If there is such a thing as being too conservative to be elected president of the United States, Ted Cruz is having none of it.

Announcing his candidacy for the Republican nomination Monday at Liberty University, the first-term senator from Texas offered himself as the pure essence of conservatism and challenged the tea party and evangelical wings of the Republican Party to rise up behind one of their own and take control of the party and the country.

His candidacy is a test of a proposition, one that he has carried across the country for many months. He has argued that the party failed to win the White House not because it has become too conservative but because Republicans have nominated politicians who were not conservative enough, who could not carry the message of today’s conservatism with energy, optimism and authenticity.

“...too conservative...”

That is exactly what this nation needs...down with the liberals and their socialist ideals....I pray this nation can turn the tide and reclaim the necessary morals and norms that made us the nation that we have all come to love.

To bring back competition - to bring back treating each other with respect - wanting to achieve - to become better - to live life with the desire to move forwards...

These last 6 yrs have been a waste — I hope the next 2 will demonstrate why no one should ever elect a democrat or RINO - EVER!

A Cruz/Walker ticket would be powerful. Especially after 8 years of Obama.

I think the nation is sick of progressivism.

LOL @ Huckabee and Santorum being his Christian CONSERVATIVE competition.

Scott Walker’s father is a minister and Walker is just as Conservative as Huckabee, (if not more) and Santorum is tiresome and ought to have the good sense to not run again.

I’m in Omaha today on business. Their local guy that comes on after Rush said Cruz is unelectable, because he has “a pointy nose”. God these Nebraska corn shuckers are stupid.....

The Democrats are loathe to admit that Hillary Clinton is seriously damaged goods. She makes the John Kerry of 2004 look like a good candidate in comparison.

There are more of them, but most of them don’t vote. That’s why Dear Leader is now pushing to make voting mandatory. A royal decree should get the job done.

Conservatism is conservatism, and Cruz is a conservative. He doesn’t have to test the limits. It’s the faint of heart GOP who wants to redefine conservatism into something it isn’t who need to test their limitations.

Oh, we are nowhere NEAR the “limits” of conservatism. The limits are on GOVERNMENT, not on the will of the people here.

All governmental entities, without an active and continuing check upon their exercise of power, eventually become tyrannical in nature. That is why this nation was conceived as a constitutional representative republic, with power divided between executive, legislative and judicial branches, each expected to act as a check on the excesses of the other two.

The will of the people has been thwarted several times already, by the failure of one or another of the three branches of government to take their responsibilities of acting as a check on the other two seriously. The fall of the House of Bourbon under Louis XVI of France should be instructive as to what happens to an unresponsive and remote government entity when too much power is gathered and handed to incompetent authority.

And boy, do we ever have a lot of power gathered in the hands of the incompetents.

The writer of this piece is wondering how far conservatism can go with Cruz. One thing for sure we’ve broken the speed limit on liberalism the last six years and look at the horrendous mess we’re in.
