Initially in this country if you didn’t own land you couldn’t vote. The purpose was to keep those that didn’t own land land to keep them from voting and taking the land from those that did own land.

Now we want to even allow illegal immigrants to vote. And what will they be voting for? Gibmedats. Legally done through the voting process.

You're actually in good company w/ this idea, but there are a number of reasons why it's a bad idea:

1. If 51% of the smart guys kick out the dumb 49% first, then there's nothing to keep the remaining bunch to vote again, and again, until there's just one smart guy in charge.
2. The dumb people have a right to pick their own leaders just like we do.  We like leaders that say, don't destroy America, that's our preference.  A dumb guy wants a leader that makes his leg tingle. that's his preference.
3. Dumb people make their own contribution to the group in their own way --there are some dumb things that are well, neat.   There's more to life than "smart".
4. America needs all kinds, including dumb followers, so we need leaders that are forced to take dumb people's existance into account.
5. Every once in a while --not that often but sometimes-- the dumb people are right and we're wrong.

We’re to either accept that ALL stupid people may vote or some stupid politician or bureaucrat may decide who is stupid. I cannot accept that and ignore the real issue here:

As we are a Republic (not a democracy...save for the local level), I view this discussion about mandatory voting as ANOTHER distraction (look who brought it up).

Our real problem is the stupid politicians and bureaucrats that run the country, not those that are counted in an insignificant popular vote for national elections. They are seeking to cement control over local elections.

I have long advocated that voters be required to pass the same civics test given to applicants for naturalized American citizenship. That would weed out a LOT of rat voters.
