Cyber-security expert Vinny Troia told Fox News Greta Van Susteren on Tuesday that he traced the IP address of the server Hillary Clinton used to host the private email account she used as secretary of state to a government building in the heart of New York City.
I did read reports that [the server] was at her house, but when we traced the IP address it came back to the city office here in downtown Manhattan, Troia told Van Susteren.
Troia is CEO of the IT consulting firm Night Lion Security.
The exact location of Clintons server has been a mystery, though after The Associated Press reported on its existence last week it was assumed by many to have been kept at her Chappaqua, N.Y. residence. The AP reported that the server was registered to that location and to a longtime Clinton associate......
....Assuming that the city officials did set this up, they would have the facilities in their building to set this up, Troia told Van Susteren. Its not a small thing to have at your house. So you would need a pretty large Internet connection to keep it up to make sure it doesnt go down.
Van Susteren was clearly intrigued by the revelation.
She asked if the IP address was traced back to the headquarters of the Clinton Foundation, the familys global charity.
Troia said it was not.
Instead, using Google Maps, Troia found that the latitude and longitude for the building came up in downtown Manhattan.
It was a city of New York officials building, he said.
Troia provided a screen shot of a map of the location in a tweet he sent out after the interview with Van Susteren......

“Im hoping that if anyone hacked her server, they are keeping their powder dry until she makes some statement, under oath, which is not true and can be shown to be not true based on what was on her server at one point in time.”
And I’m hopin’ that someone has given the info to Gowdy!
He moved from Harlem, and is now in the financial district of NY. Could be her servers are there.
Gov’t workers aren’t cheap.
so...Michael Bloomberg was complicit?
Sounds like she was using the same proxy server software your teenager probably downloaded.
Converting IP addresses to locations is a highly inexact science.
E.g., if I look up 64.94.172.146 (the address of mail.clintonemail.com) on Maxmind's free database, I get the location given in the article. But if I look up my house's IP in that same database, it gets the town right, but the lat-lon is the center of town, several miles away. My IP got changed a couple of months ago. Before that, Maxmind had me located in the next town over.
The Clintons apparently have several offices in NYC: Billy's old office famously in Harlem, the Clinton Foundation, and a personal Hillary office large enough for 25 people. My bet would be that the box has been moved to one of those locations. Guarded by the USSS, of course!
In contrast to mail.clintonemail.com, clintonemail.com is not a dedicated server but is a shared server housing over a million sites (according to DomainTools) located in the British Virgin Islands.
Bless your heart. The V. I.'s are territories of...the US!
Guess what laws govern there...US laws!
Can someone tell me how it is more convenient to buy, setup, configure, maintain, and manage your own email server versus using the @.Gov.
Nope Graig Livinstone dd it
Well, that would be different.
“You cannot, with any certainty, trace an IP address to any specific physical location.”
I can. Give me your IP address and give me about 30 minutes and I’ll post your home address and a list of the websites you visited this morning. Give me another 30 minutes and I’ll retrieve and decrypt your passwords.
And I’m not even very good at this.
(Memo to a FRiend: NEVER issue this kind of challenge on the Internet.)
You do nto have to “spoof” any IP address.
The publicly visible IP address of the domain means absolutely nothing other than who is hosting the domain.
You can however, as was pointed out up thread, locate to specific countries (usually).
You cannot get down to street address level / building level. (Except under certain condiitons)
Try it on your own IP
No kidding! Anyone who has had even a low level security clearance knows these are just basic, basic rules of security. I cant BELIEVE she was so cavalier about communicating on a non secure internet line. (Actually I can believe it but it just sickens me).
Hahaha... Good question... obviously no one had the nerve to ask?
I think a hand full of High Computer geeks could question her alot stronger than our own press corps.
You're the only one. Why not clue all the rest of us in?
When a mushroom cloud rises over Washington, some FReeper is gonna post, “Just a diversion.”
#16 I pay about $10 a month for my website so I figure the Clintons are paying the same plus a processing charge to the taxpayers of a million or two.
Its not a small thing to have at your house. So you would need a pretty large Internet connection to keep it up to make sure it doesnt go down.
WTF? A personal (or small group) email server is about as small a volume-and-bandwidth computer setup as can be. She’s talking some 55,000 emails, which is a droplet of data. He11, she could run that on her iPhone and not notice the impact.
Paid shill.
I used to run a photo server out of my basement using an old PC and freeware. My clients loved it.
Unless my wife was using the central vac that was on the same circuit for a while.
I have a little experience with my own web server. Probably more knowlege than 95% of the people in the country, but nowhere near enough to do what she did.
One morning I woke up with some Chinese crap on my server. I was pissed...but then I wondered why the hell anyone would hack MY server with nothing but head shots of Division III college athletes on it.
IT was reported the other day in the news that Trey Gowdy and Congress has known about Hillary’s email server since the beginning of last summer, also it was not a secret, numerous people in the administration has said so.
Trey Gowdy did not bother with a subpoena until AFTER the news went PUBLIC, 9 months after he found about it.
