Scott Walker supports ethanol mandate at Iowa summit
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel ^ | March 7, 2015 | Jason Stein and Mary Spicuzza

Des Moines — Only weeks after taking this key state in the presidential race by surprise, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker defended his front-runner status in Iowa by pledging to support a federal ethanol mandate, shifting his position on renewable fuels at a Republican roundup on farm issues.

The GOP governor and a lineup of other major potential presidential contenders — including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush — took the stage before hundreds of spectators and media at the Iowa Ag Summit at the state fairgrounds here.

In the moderated discussion with ethanol entrepreneur Bruce Rastetter, Walker dropped his previous flat opposition to ethanol mandates, offering a new stance that's well-suited to a state covered in cornfields. Walker signaled he now favors keeping the mandate for now and phasing it out over time — without saying over what period of time.

"I do believe it's an access issue so it's something I'm willing to go forward on renewing a (federal) Renewable Fuel Standard...so farmers going forward planting crops know what the standard is," Walker said, adding that he wanted to "get to a point where you address some of those market access issues...so you no longer need some of the subsidies."

Walker, a past critic of ethanol, acknowledged in January that he would have to spell out his position on the issue as part of his likely presidential bid. In another key issue for Iowa, Walker said that he favored drawing down federal tax credits for wind power over time.

"This is one of those where I believe it's served its purpose," Walker said of the credits. "I would support phasing that out over a period of time."(continued)

How terrible is that - he says he'd rather ensure that farmers, who have been pushed into ethanol livelihoods by the government, to know how and when things will taper off instead of suddenly leaving them in the lurch.

Obviously not presidential material...

You are correct and the idjits who now decide that ethanol is their new litmus test can't seem to grasp that he indicates a lessening of the subsidies vs. just leaving the farmers in the lurch - a sensible approach and those who abet the Left with their "principles" show they are about as smart as the average Dim.

Yup...After several rounds of "purity tests" (litmus) we will manage to give the media enough ammo to kill any moderate/conservative candidate...

...and they will wonder how Jeb Bush got to be the candidate...!!!

Seems food prices would collapse. That is a good thing.

Come on, you don't believe that, or at least you shouldn't.

Food doesn't come in cans on the supermarket shelf.

Food comes from people who grow it as a means of making a living.

To make it simple, and please don't take this personal, I'm just making a point: "Seems Cuban Leafs earnings would collapse. That is a good thing.'

Obviously it would be good for everyone but you, and those who depend on you doing your job.

We all depend on farmers doing their jobs.

The radio ad by Scott Walker opposing the ethanol mandate was approximately put out on March 7, 2006. This is proof as early as nine years ago that he used an issue as bait to get Wisconsin Conservatives to vote for him, and then when he decided he wanted to be President in 2015, he went to Iowa and changed his tune by saying he was against the mandate. Hope this clears it up for you.

I think some folks are just plain trolls too. Instead of even TRYING to see how a reasonable picture could be made of the small amount of evidence proffered they just smear and then add other smears by association.

I guess if Mitt Romney liked little babies then that means anyone who also likes little babies is evil?

Nothing was cleared up at all to the way you would have people believe.

Sounds to every evidence like “phase out but not yet” is being proposed. Ah, a politician who does not promise instant nirvana. Off with his head!

Walker’s campaign has been handed everything he could ever ask for in MSM coverage, including Rush and Matt Drudge.

I don't consider them in the MSM, they are not our enemies. That they like him is a plus in my book.

I'm a Cruz guy, I like all his positions, and I just love the way he handles the MSM, heck he can come across well in an interview with Candy Crowley. I think he would be a geat candidate. If he wins, I'm betting he picks Walker as his running mate, which should all give us pause.

I'm in a state next to Walker, and watched what the MSM and the dems did to him. The GOPe didn't support him, actually withdrew support from him and he still won. He keeps doing admirable things, those that compare him to Jeb here are insane, he's NOT like Jeb, he's far closer to us than any candidate the GOP has run since Reagan.

I don't think us Cruz supporters need to bash the guy. If Cruz doesn't run or he runs and loses to Walker, I won't be that upset (like if Jeb won), the guy has a GREAT record and for us to second guess him the way we're doing is not helpful.

My 2 cents.

You still should. I'm not your enemy, I'm just asking all fellow Cruz supporters to stop the circular firing squad.

Do you want me to remind you of what pissant posted about Palin?

As I said, your character is not something I would ever question. I always questioned the character of pissant.

I was there and saw it with my own two eyes. Hell, I think I pinged you and about a hundred others to it. You might want to do a search and see that I post negative threads about every candidate, including Ted Cruz so that (A) we know what the enemedia, RINOs and Democrats are saying about them and (B) so they're vetted.

I'm done, I've said what I wanted. I've always admired your postings, and have no desire to get into a squabble.

I've said this in multiple threads and believe it: If Cruz runs and wins, he'll pick Walker as his running mate. It's called demographics. If Walker wins he might even pick Cruz.

I think they would make a great ticket, our best chance to not only win, but to also roll back some of the crap that has attached to this country in the past two decades.

Kindly consider that reality.
