If the Republicans in DC had any desire to get enough votes to override Keystone, it wouldn't have been difficult.
I would get people out to go door to door along the tracks where the trains roll through Detroit and every other large and small city along the route. I would show people photos from Lake Megantic and other oil train derailments. I would simply state that I am GOP and I want people to know that I was trying to build Keystone to prevent disaster before it happens.
"I just want to make sure that you know I'm not to blame when disaster happens".

The only logical conclusion is that it was all posturing and they didn't want Keystone to pass. Even the ones "on our side" didn't use those indisputable arguments to support pipelines instead of rail transport.
Beyond disgusted.
