RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Shortly after dusk along a lonely stretch of Interstate 95, armed robbers hijacked an armored truck, tied up the two guards and disappeared into the night with 275 pounds of gold bars.

You could title the book “if I did it” part 2. You and 21twelve could be in cahoots.

Democrats are too dumb for this method of crime. They steal by legislation.

Now, if I could just get those guys to leave Oak Island I could go bury it with the rest of my loot!

I recall watching an old black and white movie of a robbery of the armored car place - warehouse, counting the money. Based on a true story iirc in Boston. George Kennedy?

While I hope they catch the guys, there is always something intriguing about these big heists and the mystery. (D.B. Cooper, etc.)

“With something this big”

275 lbs won’t be very big. Maybe 9” by 9” by 7”.

Gold is very, very dense and a small quantity weighs a lot.

There is a tale of 16 tons of gold hidden in the northwest corner of New Mexico- san Juan county. Interesting tale. I drove up on one if the possible locations. Quite possible it is still hidden somewhere in the four corners. I mention it if you would like to read up on it on the Internet.

Even if the truck had been sabotaged, it still would’ve had to be someone who knew about the gold. It sounds like the thieves must’ve known what they were looking for.

Thanks. There was a FR thread awhile ago about a guy that loved to explore and would buy antiques and stuff. He might have done some treasure hunting as well. He is rich now. To promote people getting off their butts and go exploring he buried a bunch of his valuable stuff. Then put up a poem/riddle as clues to get you to his buried treasure. I spent a couple of evenings on google, google earth, etc.

I’m pretty sure I know where it is - now just need to make the trip. (It’s “near a house named brown” - so that MUST mean the famous creek with brown trout in it. Right!?”

Found the link:

....” after dusk along a lonely stretch of Interstate 95”....

Sounds like the beginning of another saga in the life and times of “who gets the money”.

The truck actually had no real gold in it. It was only gold plated bars of lead.

The pros use tungsten.

The density of gold is 19.3g/cc. That of lead is only 11.34g/cc. But the density of tungsten is 19.25g/cc, a close match to gold. Eureka! I wonder if Archimedes knew about tungsten?

There's a Chinese company which sells gold-plated tungsten bars. Cited legitimate uses:

My neighbor Auric is furious. When he started melting the bars lots of tungsten floated up.
