Netflix has A Tree Grows in Brooklyn on DVD. This is a nice directorial debut for Elia Kazan, but I didn't like it quite as much as Bosley Crowther did.

And this was before he found his cinematic voice. With stuff like ‘Streetcar’ etc...

Betty Smith was quite the woman. She lived here in Chapel Hill NC for much of her life. Her papers are here at UNC.
I recently heard a biography lecture about her by Valerie Yow that profiled Betty Smith’s entire life.
Betty’s favorite phrase when caught fabricating a lie when she was young...”Well, that’s the way it should have been!”
Betty Smith answered all the soldier’s letters. Valerie read all of them in writing her book.

“NUGENT” jumped off the page in the lower right of the movie listings and I thought “The Motor City Madman is older than I thought!”

And Saratoga Geyser made Al Kaline water when “Mr. Tiger” was only 11.

Absolutely loved the movie. So much so I ran out and bought the novel and loved that.

That means she was 12 or 13 when they released the movie. Interesting.
How did you happen to come across this 7-year-old post, if I may ask?

I saw that date and looked for a mention of her on here. Where else would I look? :)
