HAPPY PURIM
Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination.
The story of Purim is told in the Biblical book of Esther. The heroes of the story are Esther, a beautiful young Jewish woman living in Persia, and her cousin Mordecai, who raised her as if she were his daughter. Esther was taken to the house of Ahasuerus, King of Persia, to become part of his harem. King Ahasuerus loved Esther more than his other women and made Esther queen, but the king did not know that Esther was a Jew, because Mordecai told her not to reveal her identity.
The villain of the story is Haman, an arrogant, egotistical advisor to the king. Haman hated Mordecai because Mordecai refused to bow down to Haman, so Haman plotted to destroy the Jewish people. In a speech that is all too familiar to Jews, Haman told the king, "There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your realm. Their laws are different from those of every other people's, and they do not observe the king's laws; therefore it is not befitting the king to tolerate them." Esther 3:8. The king gave the fate of the Jewish people to Haman, to do as he pleased to them. Haman planned to exterminate all of the Jews.
Mordecai persuaded Esther to speak to the king on behalf of the Jewish people. This was a dangerous thing for Esther to do, because anyone who came into the king's presence without being summoned could be put to death, and she had not been summoned. Esther fasted for three days to prepare herself, then went into the king. He welcomed her. Later, she told him of Haman's plot against her people. The Jewish people were saved, and Haman was hanged on the gallows that had been prepared for Mordecai.
The book of Esther is unusual in that it is the only book of the Bible that does not contain the name of G-d. In fact, it includes virtually no reference to G-d. Mordecai makes a vague reference to the fact that the Jews will be saved by someone else, if not by Esther, but that is the closest the book comes to mentioning G-d. Thus, one important message that can be gained from the story is that G-d often works in ways that are not apparent, in ways that appear to be chance, coincidence or ordinary good luck.

God bless Jews and God bless Christians. In spite of your tribulations, God is looking out for you more than you might think.
The name of the holiday is ironic. Purim means lots (as in a lottery). The lot of the Jews looked like it was going to be a huge massacre. But God changed that all.

Dear God: I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman, Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine feel alone or forgotten.
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is loving kindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.

Also the devotion of Esther and her maids (who understood the situation and were sympathetic to her and her people’s plight) is a distinct reference to God. Why would you fast otherwise? I don’t think Esther was trying to get herself and them to ace the next Weight Watchers weigh-in. Not in that context. The methods we use today to entreat the Lord in time of trouble might or might not entail fasting — but they always entail a willful turning from the consciousness of the daily humdrum to a consciousness of the Lord.

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.
May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.
May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.
G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

Learn The Cost
March 1, 2015
Read:
1 Peter 1:17-21 | Bible in a Year:
Numbers 23-25; Mark 7:14-37
We gave our 2-year-old son a pair of new boots recently. He was so happy that he didnt take them off until it was bedtime. But the next day he forgot all about the boots and put on his old sneakers. My husband said, I wish he knew how much things cost.
The boots were expensive, but a young child doesnt know about working hours, salaries, and taxes. A child receives the gifts with open arms, but we know that he cant be expected to fully appreciate the sacrifices his parents make to give him new things.
Sometimes I behave like a child. With open arms I receive Gods gifts through His many mercies, but am I thankful? Do I consider the price that was paid so I can live a full life?
The cost was expensivemore than corruptible things, like silver or gold. As we read in 1 Peter, it required the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot (1:18-19). Jesus gave His life, a high price to pay, to make us part of His family. And God raised Him from the dead (v.21).
When we understand the cost of our salvation, we learn to be truly thankful.
Lord, help me to understand, to take in what it meant for You, the Holy One, to bear my sin. Remind me to give You thanks for salvation and for all the ways You show me Your love throughout my day today.
Salvation is infinitely costly, but absolutely free.
: The description of Jesus as a lamb (1 Peter 1:19) is found throughout the New Testament, yet it has its roots in the Old Testament. John the Baptist announced Jesus arrival by calling Him the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29). And Paul referred to Jesus as our Passover (1 Cor. 5:7), which points us back to the Passover lambs offered each year in Israel as a symbol of Gods rescue of His people from Egypt. This imagery finds its fullest voice in the book of Revelation where the word Lamb is found 30 times and where Jesus is seen as the Lion who laid down His life as the ultimate sacrificial Lamb (Rev. 5:5-6).
