The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has unveiled a new Framework For Determining Whether Certain Projectiles Are Primarily Intended For Sporting Purposes. Under that rather bland rubric, ATF says that it will prohibit the sale of ammunition using the M855 bullet, which includes some of the most common types of ammunition used in AR-15 rifles.
This gets rather technical, but briefly, what we are talking about here is the projectile, or bullet. The M855 bullet has a lead core and a steel tip. It is commonly used in 5.56 and .223 cartridges. ATF proposes to ban the M855 as an armor-piercing projectile under the Law Enforcement Officers Protection Act of 1986 and the Gun Control Act of 1968. These laws generally prohibit the sale of armor-piercing ammunition in order to protect law enforcement personnel who wear bullet-proof vests.
Under the statutes, whether a bullet is armor-piercing depends on its materials. A bullet made entirely from steel or certain other materials is considered armor-piercing. However, the NRA argues:
[The M855] does not, however, have a core made of the metals listed in the law; rather, it has a traditional lead core with a steel tip, and therefore should never have been considered armor piercing.

It’s about gun control thru the back door.
And Obama knows all about coming thru the back door. Just say’n
QED; unconstitutional.
The obama two-step:
Ban lead bullets for environmental reasons.
Ban non-lead billets as “cop killers.”
Oh yeah, ban combined lead and non-lead bullets for both reason.
You can keep your guns, you just can’t have any ammo.
Just like people in the USSR needed to government permission to buy ink! (No joke.)
These tyrannical idiots don’t realize this will lead to a lot of people going the .308 route for their AR since 5.56 is being hoarded. The unintended consequence will be ARs with a more powerful round. I’d love to see Fienstien’s reaction to that news.
Common 55 gr soft nose .223 will punch right through a 1/4 inch steel plate.
I remember reading in THE MAN EATERS OF TSAVO how Patterson used a .303 rifle to punch holes in steel beams.
This is simply a test to see how easy they can ban any ammo and what they learn will be repeated.
300 Blackout w/suppressor
All these gun control acts are like a soft pillow on a baby to allegedly slow it down, but then it only takes an Obama to press it down further and choke it.
These legislative empowerments are an aberation.
I believe the armor they refer to is body armor.
Weight/ density of bullett is much more important than material indeed.
At short range steel shot might penetrate better, but lead is better at long distance.
It’s called incrementalism.. picking ‘em off, one at a time.
Saw a guy shooting a russian rifle, nagant or something, said it was 7.62x54, it went clean through a sideways 2x4 at 100 yds.
Or basically the people at Lake City have competitors who want a larger share of the ammo market. And not the usual nonsense of conservatives quibbling details with the libtard fascists when they should be telling them the 2A is not about sporting purposes regardless of the stupid crap the politically correct spout. Take the freaking “sporting purposes” varmint out back of the barn and shoot it dead, please.
I’m actually disappointed that TP and the huffy post aren’t pushing this new ban. I’d love to get on there and make the gun grabbers foam at the mouth with facts.
DING! DING! DING!
We got the winner.
That is exactly what they are doing.
Remember the Great Ammo Scare of 2013, when the public was stockpiling as much ammo as they could get their hands on? The media and the low info morons were calling them “crazy preppers” and “conspiracy kooks”. Now ammo, all kinds of ammo, is worth much more than its weight in gold. Who’s laughing now?
Great book! Do you have an original copy?
I did that with a Civil War era muzzle loaded black powder musket. The 2X4s did not like that .60 cal Minnie Ball load. ;~))
Well, I guess the rounds didn't go "clean" through... they just turned the 2X4s into tooth picks as they were passing through. ;~))
It wasn't a 'clean' wound by any means.
