Leonard Nimoy, who lived long and prospered, died Friday at his Los Angeles home.

The creator of Mr. Spock, television’s most beloved pointy-eared half-Vulcan, was 83 and had suffered for several years from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), which makes it difficult to breathe.

“I quit smoking 30 yrs ago,” he tweeted last week. “Not soon enough. I have COPD. Grandpa says, quit now!! LLAP.”

“LLAP” was Spock’s best-known catch phrase: Live long and prosper.

To many of his fans, Leonard Nimoy was a one-hit wonder.

One hit that lasted half a century.

Nimoy created the beloved Mr. Spock in the 1960s cult TV show “Star Trek” and brought him back to life in movies, sequels, cartoons and spinoffs for the rest of his life.

RIP Leonard Nimoy.

Read part of this Shatner stealing Nimoy’s bicycle story and thought it was hilarious. Didn’t know there was a live version. Well worth the 5 and a half minutes;

I beg to differ, but in the pilot, Majel Barrett was the 2nd in command but was moved due to network pressure against a female in such a leadership position. ;)

SPOCK: Don't grieve, Admiral, ...it is logical. The needs of the many ...outweigh
KIRK: ...the needs of the few.
SPOCK: Or the one. ... I never took the Kobayashi Maru test ...until now. What do you think of my solution?
KIRK: Spock!
SPOCK: I have been ...and always shall be ...your friend. ...Live long ...and prosper.
KIRK: No!

KIRK (OC): We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honoured dead. And yet it should be noted that in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world, a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel that sacrifice a vain or empty one... and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can only say this. Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, ...his was the most ...human. SULU (OC): Honours, ...hup! (bagpipes play 'Amazing Grace' as the torpedo coffin is fired)

McCOY: He's really not dead. As long as we remember him.
KIRK: 'It's a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done before. ...A far better resting place that I go to than I have ever known'.
CAROL: Is that a poem?
KIRK: No, no. Something Spock was trying to tell me. On my birthday.
McCOY: You okay, Jim? How do you feel?
KIRK: Young. I feel young.

(the torpedo coffin lays in a clearing in the new, verdant forest on the Genesis planet)
Spock's Voice: Space, the final frontier. ...These are the continuing voyages of the Starship Enterprise. ...Her ongoing mission, to explore strange new worlds, ...to seek out new lifeforms and new civilisations. ...To boldly go where no man has gone before.

Thanks for years of family entertainment. R.I.P.

Katra:

The katra, or living spirit, was the essence of the Vulcan mind and could be transferred to another person moments before death.

Star Trek (and Star Wars) have been credited with turning science fiction into science reality by inspiring legions of tech-minded individuals who took the fictional Vulcan philosophy of ‘logic above all else’ seriously.

If that's true, why are so many of these types Democrats?

What a perfect blend of actor and role. Nimoy was of Ukranian/Jewish exctraction, and had that asiatic look you’d sometimes see in Soviet leaders like Brezhnev. He frankly looked odd playing westerners and was often cast as a heavy. But Spock, with the ears and calm/placid demeanor fit him like a glove. Nobody looks as much like a Vulcan as Nimoy (save perhaps Mark Lenard, who played Spock’s father). R.I.P., Mr. Nimoy!

Uhura caught her breath. “I’m so sorry, Mr. Spock!” she said. “The image …” She began to laugh again. “I … am … sorry!” She redoubled her effort at control and finally achieved some measure of it. Between gasping breaths, she said earnestly, “I could … almost hear the captain give the command: ‘Eyebrow on stun, Mr. Spock….’

Nimoy was a fine stage actor as well. I saw his one man show “Vincent” about Vincent Van Gogh. In it he actually played Van Gogh’s brother Theo who told the story of Vincent Van Gogh. He was very good.

Ok two bits of insider trivia....

First the Spock Vulcan character ...Many know the Gene Roddenberry used to be LAPD...and he was a major fan of the famous chief Parker he worked with him

Parker personality was old school taciturn totally rational logical absolute personal integrity and to what some might think somewhat cold blooded white anglo-saxon Protestant Conservative Republican in the Thomas Dewey tradition.... while Roddenberry was a liberal he deeply admired Parkers strong headed rationality and personal integrity.....the whole Spock Vulcan character and philosophy start is based on Parker a Conservative and how a Liberal that admired him saw him...logical rational.great personal integrity but sometimes heartless cold blooded and a bit of a tight ass.

On Nimoy.. he was was not Spock.. and was wild sometimes....the rather famous movie from the seventies Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice is a based on a true story and Nimoy is the Ted character

Was surprised to learn that his writing and directing credits are few. He did direct “3 Men And A Baby.”

He once told where he came by the Vulcan hand gesture. He was young at temple and they came to the part where the rabbi asked the people to turn around so he could bless them. He peeked and saw the rabbi do that gesture.
