Leonard Nimoy, the sonorous, gaunt-faced actor who won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and movie juggernaut Star Trek, died on Friday morning at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 83.
His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Many, if not most aspiring actors want to become actors because they have seen how performances can inspire others. Most who do become actors, however, rarely get the chance to make such a performance.
But Lenard Nimoy, James Doohan, Deforest Kelly, and Nichelle Nichols, all achieved roles that inspired audiences. So many kids were inspired into engineering careers by this cast.
RIP Leonard Nimoy

From The Big Bang Theory, “The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis”
“Sheldon Cooper: [Opens Penny’s gift] Oh, a napkin...
Penny: Turn it over.
Sheldon Cooper: [Reading] “To Sheldon: Live long and prosper... Leonard Nimoy!”
Penny: He came into the restaurant. Sorry the napkin’s dirty - he wiped his mouth with it.
Sheldon Cooper: [Face twitching excitedly] I possess the DNA of Leonard Nimoy?
Penny: Yeah, yeah, I guess, but look, he signed it.
Sheldon Cooper: [Now shaking with excitement] Do you realize what this means? All I need is a healthy ovum and I could grow my own Leonard Nimoy!”
OK Sheldon, We’re all counting on you to bring him back!

Bummer when we see those we “grew up with” die off. Sheldon will be devastated.

The only pity is that Nimoy got a bit too
typecast in the role of Spock.
That was not true of William Shatner, who revived his career with the successful police drama T. J. Hooker and more recently success playing a lawyer in Boston Legal. And became a very successful pitchman for the Priceline web site.

Eh, it's not Quinto's fault. He does a fairly superior impersonation, but how he's directed to play the character (and how he's written) is false.
To: Exeter
That’s my favorite episode.

I'm glad that as he got older, he fully embraced the Spock character. Spock's alienness was used by the show to explore exactly what it is to be human. He accomplished a lot outside of that character, but it will be what he is best remembered for.
