15 New York Towns Are Looking To Secede From The Empire State And Join Their Neighbor

Businesses have been fleeing the Southern Tier of upstate New York for years. Now, fifteen New York towns are looking to do something about the exodus by seceding from New York and joining Pennsylvania, according to WBNG:

“The Upstate New York Towns Association is researching this very topic. The group says a few factors pushing its research are high property taxes, low sales tax revenue and the recent decision to ban hydraulic fracturing in New York.

‘The Southern Tier is desolate,’ said Conklin Town Supervisor Jim Finch (R). ‘We have no jobs and no income. The richest resource we have is in the ground.'”

Businesses started leaving for neighboring Pennsylvania when Gov. Andrew Cuomo was in the process of considering an adverse decision on fracking in New York. Now that he has decided to ban it outright, businesses are increasingly moving their wealth-generating activities elsewhere.

Broome County GOP Chairman Bijoy Datta, who grew up in Windsor (one of the towns considering secession), tells IJReview that it’s easy to see how this anger has built up:

“‘These New York towns are literally a stone’s throw from Pennsylvania and they see the economic results of gas drilling – more jobs, new roads, reduced taxes and higher property values – and it’s just out of their reach because big government said ‘no.’”

Even worse for the area, Cuomo’s decision on fracking was made on the same day the region was passed over for one of the casino licenses the state was giving out. Currently, there are plans to open the bidding for a casino in the Southern Tier again.

I think that’s the only governorship to flip from Republican to Democrat last year.

For 2 main reasons:

1. Corbett signed into law a totally unnecessary gas tax increase, which Wolfie cynically demagogued in his campaign ads

2. A perception (promulgated by our corrupt b***h of an AG Kathleen Kane) that Corbett was somehow complicit in covering up the Penn State/Jerry Sandusky scandal, which ultimately led to the firing of the much-beloved Joe Paterno

And Corbett's unwillingness to defend himself (ala GWB) played a role too.

"The T" of Pennsylvania demands that citizens arm themselves. Is the Southern Tier up for that?

The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area is in red, the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area is in blue, and the "Pennsyltucky counties" are white.

jttpwalsh:" I realized one square block in Manhattan contained more Cuomo voters than all of the signs that I saw."

He alienated the teachers union, the SAFE ACT citizens (many of whom are now criminals),WorkingFamilys, and the Commies of NYC.
He even had to invent a new party just to split the vote, thus assureing the victory.
That is why the GOP election funds that Christy withheld would have allowed a decent representation for Asterino (R candidate) and a probable Governor change.
Cuomo's relection money came from downstate NYC , realestate investors, and those who would benefit from 'rent stabilization' at rates from the 1980's.
Christy's actions, by not giving money to Asterino's GOP Governors campaign, assured Cuomo's victory.
Chirsty is a RINO , should be listed as a Demorat, and cannot be trusted by anyone.
Christy facilitated Cuomo's (D,-NY) re-election.

I knew the GOP candidate was doomed, but did not realize how complicit the NJ Governor was, in the deed. Thanks for your reply.

There’s large swathes of the Pittsburgh metro area that are conservative. The big democrat strongholds are Allegheny and Beaver counties.
