More than 4,700 square miles of ice formed over the Great Lakes in just one night on Tuesday.
The Arctic blast that swept the Midwest and Northeast saw a near-record amount of Lake Ontario was iced over, with just 20 per cent of open water left.
Overall 82 percent of the five water bodies sealed up.
Temperatures are expected to drop again on Thursday night, leading forecasters to predict that figure to climb significantly by Friday morning.

Those of us who dont live near one of the lakes have no idea how large they really are.
First time I saw one of the lakes was in 1986, Camp Perry, Ohio. The M16 range went out over the lake. Just amazing.

Off topic....Rudy Giuliani just stood up for himself. So glad he didn’t apologize! He was just on The Kelly File.

Michigan and the Great Lakes are giving Alaska some competition.

I’ve competed on that range. It’s a blast. Interestingly, I also fell in love on that range. Fifteen years later we are married with three kids.

To get a sense of how large Lake Superior is ...
The sun rises in Superior, Wisconsin -- at the far western end of the lake -- about half an hour after it has risen in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario -- at the far eastern end of the lake. If you drive between these two cities along the north shore of the lake through Ontario, the drive will take you about 11.5 hours.
You can fit all of the water in the other four Great Lakes into Lake Superior, and there would still be enough room to add the water from three more lakes the size of Lake Erie.
That is an immense body of water.

-2 here in Jenison. The still open water of Lake Michigan is keeping us a little warmer.
