Flashbacks to last years brutal Senate primary in Mississippi have The Magnolia State operatives fretting a special election to replace the late Rep. Alan Nunnelee.
Nunnelee, 56, died on Feb. 6 after a short battle with brain cancer. Republicans will almost certainly retain his seat in a yet-to-be scheduled special election, but multiple Mississippi GOP operatives expressed concern the race could become a proxy battle between state Sen. Chris McDaniels tea party supporters and mainstream Republicans who supported Sen. Thad Cochrans re-election in 2014.
Fresh from launching the United Conservatives Fund super PAC last month, McDaniel said his group could support a candidate in the 1st District special election.
The United Conservatives Fund has been contacted by many regarding several prospective candidates to run for the District 1 Congressional seat previously held by Congressman Alan Nunnelee, McDaniel said in a statement to CQ Roll Call. Our UCF team is currently discussing scenarios and who we might support in the election, if anyone.
Local operatives were hesitant to speak on the record a day after hundreds packed a church in Tupelo, Miss., for Nunnelees funeral. But a handful of state Republicans privately expressed concern to CQ Roll Call about McDaniels involvement in the race.
We all remember what we went through last year, said one Mississippi Republican operative who lives in the 1st District. We are not anxious to repeat that process again.
Meanwhile, prospective candidates to succeed the three-term congressman have started to surface.
Republicans named the following politicians as potential candidates: Mississippi Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert, who is gearing up for re-election to his current gig, and former Tupelo Mayor Glenn McCullough, who lost the GOP primary in a 1st District special election in 2008.

Mississippi is a Conservative state but our Congressmen and Senators have less than Conservative voting records. We may be on the verge of correcting that thanks to Senator McDaniel. You have to be aware of the problem before you can fix it.
The Tea Party needs to kick butt NOW!
We did it in Colorado last night and the GOPe were pretty damn upset!
Last night continued the wave of Colorado Counties dethroning the GOPe.
The “it’s my turn” crowd lost big in the most feisty county in the state.
Wait and see the results of the State meeting in March.
The Governor cannot appoint an "interim Congressman". Unlike Senators, all Congressmen must be elected.
Accordingly, the Governor will call a special election.
What a digusting campaign MS GOPe’s ran against McDaniel.
I hope McDaniel supporters draw blood in the primary! And then some.
“The Governor cannot appoint an “interim Congressman”. Unlike Senators, all Congressmen must be elected....”

Yes, I know. If you go back and read my post you’ll see that I was referring to the anticipated (by me and many others) vacating of Senator Cochran’s seat before his term ends and the determination of his replacement.
My apologies.
Not a problem. I fully expect that Cochran will retire very early in 2016 so that the (Barbour machine) interim replacement will not face a special election but will instead only have to run in the 2016 regularly scheduled elections.
When is the RINO hunting season in Mississippi?
I think Bryant may very well appoint Tubby Barbour himself if and when Thad the Cad goes.
Each and every day. No bag limit.
On a side note, Id love to see McDaniel run for the seat.

Polling just before the Senate primary had McDaniel at 45% or so in the CD 1 district.
I don’t how he did on election day. But apparently he was well thought of .
The problem with him running for the Rep. position is that I’d bet people in the
district would feel they have someone within their district that is capable without
bringing in someone from outside. JMO.
I agree with you, McDaniel can play the Sarah Palin role for now in Mississippi and try to promote true constitutional conservative candidates. He should save himself to later take the “Cochran Senate seat” when that sell-out retires “early”.
I see your point. Cochran won legally, but in a despicable manner. (not looking to argue that with anyone, it’s over). I do agree that McD challenging the results as he did failed to do anything good for his public image outside of strong conservatives, the chances of success were zero.
I wish Nixon had whined though, grand theft White House was the crime of the century (also happened in 1916) and should not have been tolerated.
Filing deadline was yesterday for the MS 2015 state election.
Governor Bryant has a desultory primary challenger and 3 desultory rat challengers.
LT Governor Tate Reeves’ main foe is traitorous party switching former RINO State Senator Tim Johnson (D).
Former AUSA Mike Hurst (R) was a last minute entry against Rat AG Jim Hood, preventing that POS from running unopposed. Beating Hood should the state party’s #1 priority this election. None of the GOP incumbents in all the other statewide offices appear to be in danger, 2 have only intra-party foes.
Chris McDaniel is running for reelection to the State Senate, might make a primary challenge to Rep. Steve Palazzo next year.
Palazzo is very weak in the GOP primary. It’s shocking he almost lost to that Pelosi-supporting party-switching phony, Gene Taylor, but not in the general, but the primary ! At present, that’s McDaniel’s sole course of action. No doubt the corrupt establishment cheaters will pull out all the stops to help Palazzo.

Don’t be fooled by the headline, it doesn’t say he’s running.
“Fresh from launching the United Conservatives Fund super PAC last month, McDaniel said his group could support a candidate in the 1st District special election.”
Indeed, he is considering running in CD 4 himself.
U are uninformed but self righteous
