I can’t tell you how often I misremember whether it was the helicopter in front of me that got hit with a rocket or the one I was riding in.

Some of those were pretty good. Some of ours were better. ;-)

Depends on the meaning of the phrase “shot down”.

One wonders what was going through his head when he was making such an easily disproved and refutable statement??
Did he really not think any one of those folks he was there with would turn up to call him on it?
I could see him thinking he'd get away with faking it if he was some no-name reporter from the "Podunk Patch Gazette" that no one knows of, but he's a national figure on a national network, his face on the screen every night.
Makes no sense at all.

It’s the progressive stage of acute liberalism. Others have had it, too. Remember, Al Gore “invented the internet”, Hillary “dodged bullets”, any Kerry “got a Purple Heart” in Vietnam (for a splinter I think).
There’s no limit to the liberal ego, they have no “shame” gene;

Someone speculated that he was just trying to impress Letterman during the interview and got carried away.

True enough.
But it’s stupid to do something like that when there are multiple sources that WILL show up to bite him on the arse.
I guess that’s the point I was trying to make - why do something that will ultimately, publicly, make one look like a horse’s ass?
But... it’s sort of fun to sit back and watch the sharks circle sometimes... especially when it’s well-deserved.

I would not have chosen to make this mistake, Williams told Stars and Stripes in a statement. I dont know what screwed up in my mind that caused me to conflate one aircraft with another.
You exaggerated and lied and continued to embellish your effort to match Tom Brokaw's military image FOR TWELVE YEARS!
Of course, most of us here already knew you are a liar.
(Was this the same chopper ride that Hillary Clinton said came under fire?)

The difference between a combat veteran and a non-combat veteran is the NON combat vet has better war stories.
The combat vet seldom talks about his experiences.

Impress Letterman by falsifying an easily-proved/disproved event... Again... the intelligence factor kicks in.
Sort of reminds me of that guy in the Mall wearing an Army uniform, and a real Vet calls him out on it, from a few months back.
Vets who have been in harm’s way should be outraged and innundate this clown at every opportunity.

He did it to Arec Baldwin too. Claiming a near death experience:
Ive done some ridiculously stupid things under that banner, Williams said, like being in a helicopter I had no business being in in Iraq with rounds coming into the airframe.
Did you think you would die? Baldwin asked.
Briefly, sure, Williams said.
Do you tell yourself thats the job? Baldwin said.
Oh, absolutely, Williams said, before explaining his responsibility to experience the Iraq and Afghanistan wars along with the troops fighting them.
