Bernice was the womans name who wiped his face, the story first appears in Acts of Pilate 4th century it was thought to be a legend Bernice got corrupted into Veronica fairly easily because of the words Vera Icon mean True Image in Latin and the play on words lead both into Veronica. St. Veronica.
