Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro says the owners of an unnamed chain of shops have been arrested for artificially creating long queues.
Mr Maduro said the owners had reduced the number of employees working on cash tills in order to create queues and "annoy the Venezuelan people".
He has accused Venezuela's business elite of boycotting his government.
The opposition blames the socialist policies of the past 16 years for the worsening economic crisis.
"Yesterday we detected that a famous chain of stores was conspiring, irritating the people," said Mr Maduro.
"We came, we normalized sales, we summoned the owners, we arrested them and they're prisoners for having provoked the people," he said.

Venezuelan military tells customers not to take pictures of empty shelves in supermarkets
I’m sure Venezuelan bureaucrats work tirelessly to prevent people from having to queue for gov’t services in Venezuela.
“”We came, we normalized sales, we summoned the owners, we arrested them and they’re prisoners for having provoked the people,” he said.”
Must be nice to make laws on the spot. Obama is taking notes.
Pass the buck, pass the blame propaganda of the worst kind.
I wonder if anyone really believes that crap, but maybe some do.
Maduro is getting more desperate and his days may be numbered.
Obviously in Venezuela, store “owner” doesn’t mean “ownership” in the normal sense of the word.
Only in communism is closing a store down so no one can buy anything the solution for long lines of people hoping there will be something left to buy when they get to the store.
Arrest them.
The army was officially authorized a few days ago to use live ammunition against protestors if necessary.
At the rate things are going, the bullets may soon being flying.
The shortages of medical supplies are rapidly increasing and the chain of stores targeted by arrest of its executives yesterday happens to be a large chain of pharmacies like CVS or Walgreens in this country.
This pig should meet the same fate as all tyrants, such as Allende.
Wouldn’t hurt my feelings after being told I should have forged signatures by my local DMV. This was after my local branch uniterally decided they wouldn’t accept certain legal documents they were required to accept by state law resulting in a additional two week wait to register a car.
Meanwhile I was out $600 in additional rental fees when it should have on,y been one or two days for a rental. Of course my Democrat state Rep and Sen saw nothing wrong with what happened.
He was looking for an excuse to confiscate the stores.
That’s the DMV in Ft. Collins CO isn’t it? I recognize the wretched place. lol
I am surprised they did not execute the prisoners as abject lessons to others.
Meanwhile I was out $600 in additional rental fees...
Your mistake was believing that was your 600.00, you were just holding/renting until you representative had time to confiscate from you.
Sounds like the craziness that took place in China in the 60’s and 70’s.
How long till they start shooting the Kulaks?
And the lines got instantly shorter?
This imbecile has got to go.
Had nothing to do with the fact that there was nothing for them to sell I'm sure. Gotta keep 'em on the payroll no matter what. What was it they used to say in the Soviet Union--"We pretend to work, and they pretend to pay us".
Here in S Florida “SOS Venezuela” signs can be seen all over and on cars. There isnt a huge amount of Venezuelan Americans but they are starting to get more support...finally.
