From Sarah Palin to Donald Trump to Ben Carson, Republicans Just Can't Get Enough of obviously unqualified presidential contenders.

Holding onto a pronounced regional accent "speaks" to a gratuitous egotism and stubbornness; winners do what it takes to get the job done. It's no moral compromise to have a neutral accent. it may even be a signal that you are not going to favor one group over another.
When I moved away to college, I eased out of my regional accent as soon as possible and adopted what I called "television announcer English." It made going through school easier, and it made doing business easier once I got out of school. Not everyone has an "ear" however for how they may sound to others; that's where a good vocal coach comes in. She needs one.
Yes, or Gary Johnson, last cycle's version.
But, sadly, I *still have to agree with the main thrust of the article* which is that we waste way too much time on people who are not going to be POTUS ever.
The USA elects Governors, Senators and VPs as President. Occasionally very successful Generals. If you cut our list down to people with those qualifications it would still be large but you would lose obvious noise-makers like Trump, Carson, Fiorina, Newt.
Also, I think some number of failed runs should disqualify one: has any perennial candidate ever won? Reagan ran twice, Bush Sr. ran twice, Mitt ran twice (winning the nomination the second time)... but the Ron Paul type never wins in the end. Thus: Santorum, Newt, Huckabee - BE GONE!
Is it a good day or a bad day for Conservatives? Mitt dropped out. That might mean the GOPe can rally around Jeb, making him even more formidable. But, on the other hand we are spared another Mitt run, thank God. I'll say, on balance a good day. It means Gov. Christy Creame has to duel Jeb for GOPe slot, hopefully down to the wire splitting Altantic states and causing them both to fail.
Gratuitous egoism is what makes people go into politics in the first place, even the good ones. I remember reading that Jimmy Carter had a speech coach in preparation for his intro onto the national stage. He would sound like an idiot speaking flawless French, but it apparently did help him to some degree. Some people can get away with it more than others. A strong vocabulary and good reasoning will make a big difference. I think it would help her to improve in this area.
Football coach and soldier are the two professions where a pronounced accent of almost any kind actually seems to be an indication of greater gravitas.
It's Frustrating. Some of it I put down to lack of the will to tell lefty friends they are idiots, and being kicked out of the "cool kids" clique. Hey, that happens everywhere, even here at FR!
“Some of it I put down to lack of the will to tell lefty friends they are idiots, and being kicked out of the “cool kids” clique.”
Well said. I think the hipster Libertarians like being on the outside. They only have to criticize the two party system, and it allows them to have a somewhat coherent world view, while still towing the pop-culture line so they don’t piss off their lefty friends over a growler of craft beer. It’s also a way to be somewhat edgy and challenging to impress hipster girls. In politicians, the fiscally conservative and socially liberal type ALWAYS reverts to being liberal on both.
I have fun with those people by telling them that all I want in immigration are the same restrictions described for Galt’s Gulch in Atlas Shrugged (you had to be invited). I’ve offered this several times, and never gotten a response.
LOL
“Gillespie, a frequent guest on the libertarian love-fest Stossel, is a schmuck himself, if you call someone who believes that the U.S. should have no borders and that illegal aliens should get blanket amnesty a schmuck (which I do). “
More like treason to me.
The first two were not even real candidates, they were hoax candidates.
Both never intended on running but knew playing it out would get lots of media attention.
This was from the hoax campaign video shot in Iowa (high qulaity vid too)
Yeah, well as far as I can tell he at least served out his term. He didn’t jump ship midway through.
Great fun for a Friday afternoon.
Romney only won a single election in his entire career, he failed so badly that he couldn’t run for reelection and left with 34% approval.
Palin has won many elections and may have been the most popular governor in history, with consistent approval ratings in the mid 80s and even reaching 93%.
More importantly to we conservatives, and what makes you guys so angry, is her leading to, and helping create and lead a conservative movement.
Romney has always been at war with conservatism, it is why he left the GOP because of Reagan, and eventually became a democrat supporter, fund raiser, and voter.
I”m not the least big angry. It’s Friday. The sun is shining. I have my feet up. Enjoying a beer.
You can twist the facts all you want, but Mrs. Palin, popular as she was, resigned in the middle of her term. Should she become President, how does she react when the heat gets turned up? Its a legitimate concern.
You keep missing the point don’t you.
Palin has won many elections, including Governor and being the republican vice presidential candidate.
She is a true and successful politician, not a Herman Cain, or Trump, or a Dr. Carson.
By the way, she served 32 months, not 24, and Romney is just as I described him. “”Romney has always been at war with conservatism, it is why he left the GOP because of Reagan, and eventually became a democrat supporter, fund raiser, and voter.””
I’m not even sure why you’re bringing up Romney. He’s not running. He’s old news.
I don’t think the definition of a true and successful politician is one who throws in the towel before his or her term is up. Unless its for medical reasons. Politics is a tough tough business; some can take it, some can’t.
If Mrs. Palin truly believes she has a shot at the nomination, she’ll run. But I highly doubt she will. And if i’m wrong, so be it.
Dear God, please, no. Please, please, no.
I don’t even know what you are talking about, you don’t seem to be following my posts at all.
You guys get so weird about conservatives that your trolling posts don’t make any sense.
In spite of your protestations, I can assure you I am a conservative. One doesn’t have to be a believer in the potential of Sarah Palin as a viable Presidential contender to be a conservative.
Big words coming from an uber-libertarian like Gillespie. Does he think Rand Paul is qualified? I don’t.
I think you are confused about what the conversation was about.
And conservatives are happy about Palin’s power and influence, they don’t troll against her.
Religious and national defense conservatives also wouldn't agree with Gillespie much either.
He has his own libertarian agenda that isn't shared by many people here.
Just because he attacks the same targets some people aim at doesn't mean he's coming from the same place.
