Scott Walker proposes big cut to University of Wisconsin System
MSNBC ^ | January 28, 2015 | David Taintor, graduate of the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a potential 2016 GOP contender who never earned a college degree, has proposed a huge cut in funding for the University of Wisconsin system over the next two years.

Walker’s office pitched the plan, which is part of the governor’s budget proposal, boasting it would give the university system more discretion over its finances. But it also carries a $300 million cut and a tuition freeze for the UW system over two years. That amounts to a 13% decrease of state funding for the university system, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.......

Rebecca Blank, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, the system’s flagship campus, was more pointed. “Although we have not yet seen full details of Governor Walker’s plan, I am concerned about the magnitude of the proposed budget cuts and their impact on UW-Madison,” she said in a Tuesday statement. “… Fully absorbing these cuts would have a harmful impact on our students and their educational experience.”....

The university system likes subsidized education - loves all those student loans that "cover" tuition costs that grow and grow and grow. Why spend endowment money when you can build and hold on to billions?

List of colleges and universities in the United States by endowment - As of 2013 the U of WI - Madison had a $2.02 Billion endowment fund.

Perhaps it is time for Rebecca Blank to take a look at scrubbing the useless and non-productive schools within the university. She could start with ensuring that reading, writing, and arithmetic are improved by putting all else on the chopping block. My guess is that 40% of the schools could be eliminated and no one would notice.

>> Governor Walker "never earned a college degree"

So what does that say about the value of a "college degree?"

Academic: Not of practical relevance; of only theoretical interest

Yeah, I'm being selective in my choice of definitions, but I'm playing the author's game...

I fully support education as do most, but the reality of operational costs can't be ignored.

There's always room for efficiency. The private sector knows this, and so should the beneficiaries of taxation.

I applaud Walker for recognizing “Big Education” is an absolute failure and a clear & present danger to all children.

Big Ed has replaced true education with socialist indoctrination.

That said, Walker’s pro-amnesty (i.e. “pathway to citizenship”, “immigration reform”, or whatever brand name they use) is a poison pill for the final nail in the coffin to destroy the Constitution.

Add his support of homo “marriage”, Walker is not what America needs in 2016.

UW System - 13 Four Year Colleges 13 2 year colleges that have courses for students to have mediocre grades in High school to beefen up there grades than attend one of 13 4 year colleges to complete a bachelors degree.
UW - Madison
UW - Milwaukee
UW - Oshkosh
UW - Green Bay
UW - Platteville
UW - Superior
UW - River Falls
UW - Eau Claire
UW - Stout
UW - La Crosse
UW - Parkside
UW _ stevens Point
I cannot remember the other one.

13 2 year campuses
UW - Washington Co Center - West Bend
UW - Waukesha Co Center - Waukesha
UW Fox Valley Center - Appleton
UW Fond du Lac center - Fond du Lac

There are large community colleges too in many of the same areas, with the transfer of college credits. So much wasted tax dollars in Wisconsin on colleges.

Milwaukee Area Technical College ( Milwaukee, South Milwaukee, West Allis and Mequon (Ozaukee County)
Madison Area Technical College
Waukesha County Technical College
Moraine Park Technical College (West Bend, Fond du Lac, Beaver Dam)
Nicolet Technical College
Fox Valley Technical College (appleton)
Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (Green Bay and Marinette)
Northwest Technical College
Just an example to show how much the UW system is messed up. There is also the UW Extension that has offices in many counties courthouses where by courses can be made available online. The UW System is so filled with redundant programs that could be the elimination of many other areas. Technical Colleges are numerous throughout Wisconsin

There are private colleges in wisconsin too.

But it also carries a $300 million cut and a tuition freeze for the UW system over two years.

These are the folks who were hiding the better part of a BILLION dollars while asking for another tuition increase. They were found out under Walker.

That is what every state should do. Why should these Leftist indoctrination centers raise tuition at twice or three times the rate of inflation every year? When students graduate they can’t find jobs because they have paid for dud degrees. We don’t need more degrees waiters trying to pay off tens of thousands of dollars of student loans.

And most high school graduates entering college are required to take remedial classes in math, reading and/or writing.

Big Education is ripping us off and killing our country.

The education system is for educators, not for students

Students exist to provide reasons for salaries

I read where, nationally, the average college professor teaches 1.8 class per semester, or less than 6 hours in the classroom per week.
