Local governments are increasingly promoting mixed-income housing as a tool for fighting poverty, on the assumption that economic integration gives low-income children a better chance at overcoming poverty. New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio, for instance, has set a target of building 200,000 affordable housing units in the city, and he wants them to be distributed throughout mixed-income and more affluent neighborhoods. “Our goal is really to foster more economically diverse neighborhoods,” Alicia Glen, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development, told the New York Times.
These programs rest on the assumption that mixed-income communities benefit low-income residents. Poorer children might profit from access to better neighborhood schools and facilities; the aspirations of their better-off, more future-oriented peers might rub off on them. Such a housing policy seems especially attractive when you consider that a child born into a low-income neighborhood has a 64 percent chance of moving down the socioeconomic ladder over the course of his life. Low-income neighborhoods suffer from higher crime rates, lower educational attainment, and poorer health; recent research even found a connection between growing up in a poor neighborhood and PTSD.
But a new paper in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry suggests that mixed-income housing has its own problems, too. A team of researchers at Duke University found that low-income boys in mixed-income communities are more likely than their peers in uniformly poor neighborhoods to engage in anti-social behavior such as fighting, lying, and stealing. The greater the economic inequality in the neighborhood, the worse the low-income boys in this study fared.

Libs have already tried that in suburbs 3-4 decades ago, and it failed.
As the poor moved in and local crime increased, those more financially able moved out.
Thus, the result was little more than a movement of the poor and crime from inner cities to the suburbs.
What about the most important factor, morality?

This happened quite often back in the 1960s when a realtor would sell a house in a white area to a poor black family.
All the other houses would then go up for sale at very reduced prices as the whites moved away.
If a house did not sell, often the white family would just abandon their home investment and move away. We knew a family that did that. A year later, they drove by their abandoned nice house. All the windows were broke out, the doors gone and the refrigerator laying in the front yard.
It was called “Blockbusting”.
Most people are more comfortable with other people who look like themselves.

A look at any demographic map confirms that.
Following that logic, all we have to do to eliminate ghettos and high crime areas is put a few Tiffany’s in and VOILA-things start improving! Somehow I think the opposite has always proven true-putting a business( or naïve people who fix up abandoned housing or move into ‘mixed income’ projects) into a poverty ridden area means the business(and the people) get harassed, robbed,perhaps killed, and eventually leave said ghetto as it was before. If I’m wrong, all concerned businesses have to do( Macy’s, Tiffany,Lord and Taylor,Saks etc is open in South Central LA, or Bed Stuy, or the Lower 9th ward of N.O. Wonder why they don’t?
It’s not the wealthy, it’s the middle class working stiff. Yes the rich just move on it’s the average working person who can’t afford to walk away from a house that has now lost its equity because of a deteriorating neighborhood that gets hurt. They’re stuck. The neighborhood is no longer safe, their children’s schools decline and soon businesses start to flee because of crime. You notice rich liberals never put these “mixed income” people on the upper eastside or Beacon Hill. It’s always the hardworking, white middle class that gets this stuff shoved down their throats.
If big government would leave us alone, we’d all still believe in Jesus.
That’s why big gov’t exists - in the spirit of anti-Christ.

I recall decades ago my county in Maryland had low crime and few social ills like drug use or poverty.
I recall back then the libs would complain about the lack of diversity here and passed a law forcing apartments to take section 8, and payed for half of houses prices for affordable housing to the lower income so they could live with us, to fix the problem.
Now that we have the diversity that they demanded they complain about the wage and income inequity and blame that for the resulting crimes.
Who cudda guessed?
I want to see the liberals start forcing rich liberals to live in the ghetto. Try that one on for size. They wouldn’t be as likely to steal things, or envy their neighbors.

Diversity destroys!
They have done tests with baby chicks. They hatch white chicken eggs and brown chicken eggs in the same brooder. As soon as they hatch the chickens all separate at opposite ends of the pen according to color.
It isn’t natural for races to mix.
Of course the Lefties dream of the day when they will control housing and get to assign you a place to live, just like in the Soviet Union.

This is wonderful... put them in liberal elite white neighborhoods. We all know 'white' rubs off if a black person's withing 800 feet of a white person while they're sleeping.
In a school environment being within 10 feet of a white person makes that person's success and values and luck rub off. It's like witchcraft... African medicine men will tell you... get that 'luck'...
On a darker note, it'll make white liberal elites a little more 'in touch' with their culture.. a good thing for an honest discussion of race -- minus the unicorns...
Boys compete - it's hard wired into the male brain.
Putting a young man into an environment where he can't compete successfully is cruel. This liberal elite scam works the same in colleges where black male children are given scholarships to schools based on 'diversity'... and they're placed in a disadvantaged position intentionally. The same young man who would do well in a State College system - and grow in confidence from the experience - are instead 'placed above their skill level - positioned to lose'.
Colleges are talking about giving the same sick 'advantage' to poor and middle class white kids. We must stop them from hurting our kids like they've hurt minority children. Fight this cruelty for the black kids and for our own kids. Let white liberal elites compete with each other... let the 'bottom half of the Ivy Schools be filled with white liberal elites. Not with black kids and white working class kids. White liberal elites have enough advantages without adding the that the power of knowing they're in 'the top half' of all good college beause ringers have been placd in the bottom.
Alice Robb might be onto something here... nice to see the New Republic thinking a little outside the brain-dead liberal box... there is hope. David and Goliath by Malolm Gladwell is a great place to start thinnking about this...
