Box Office: 'American Sniper' Hits $200M After $64M Weekend
Forbes ^

Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper scored another stunning victory over its second weekend of wide release. The Warner Bros. /Time Warner TWX -2.14% Inc. war drama earned another $64.365 million over the weekend, which was a weekend-to-weekend drop of just 28%. It has now earned $200.137m domestic. That’s also the biggest non-debut-weekend in history for an R-rated film, easily besting the $53m second Friday of The Passion of the Christ as well the over/under $30m second weekends of Hannibal, The Matrix Reloaded, The Hangover, The Hangover part II, and 300. If there was any question, it is now clear that, inflation and IMAX/PLF bumps notwithstanding, American Sniper is indeed playing like the (all due respect) second coming of The Passion of the Christ. Mel Gibson’s “last days of Jesus” drama from 2004 dropped 36% in 2004 from an $83 million Fri-Sun debut (out of a $125m Wed-Sun debut) to a $53m second Fri-Sun weekend. It ended its twelfth day with $213m domestic. If you want to (unfairly?) play straight ten-day totals, American Sniper now has $200m while The Passion of the Christ had $174m domestic.

Kipling's "Arithmetic on the Frontier".

When I was a student at the Armed Forces Staff College back in the 1960s I used that poem to illustrate the problem we then faced in Vietnam. We face it again in Afghanistan.

I am taking all the low flow restrictions out of my shower heads.
Then I am going to turn up the pellet stove and open the Windows.
Lastly, I think I will fire up the chainsaw and go cut some trees down, just for fun.

We tried to buy advance tickets for last night 6:45 show, but it was sold out. Went out for dinner instead.

We watched boyhood last weekend. It was very well done. I would recommend it. They filmed it over Twelve years with the same actors(2002-2014). I have never seen anything like it.
Be warned, it is long.

Yes, I'm looking forward to it. I'll probably get it from Redbox next weekend. I wouldn't be surprised (or disappointed) to see Richard Linklater take Best Director for such an enormous undertaking.

Bunch of bloodthirsty, jingoistic Neanderthals.

I bought tickets on Fandango and paid an extra fee just to be sure I had them as I was afraid of that very thing.

The great thing about a Clint Eastwood production (from a Hollywood accounting perspective) is that his films always come in on or ahead of time and on budget.

Did you notice the fake baby at all?

To leftists, not being anti-war is being pro-war. Just like Fox, not being leftist but rather balanced, to them is conservative.

I tried Friday, but Saturday and Sunday were sold out. Looks like the movie will have a big third weekend, too.

The Academy doesn’t concern itself with box office when voting for Oscars. And it doesn’t matter if viewers feel “cheated” if their favorite doesn’t win. What matters is getting popular films NOMINATED for Best Picture, so more viewers will watch the broadcast to see if their horse wins.

The Academy increased the number of films eligible to be nominated for Best Picture to increase the Oscar broadcast audience. “American Sniper” has NO CHANCE — NONE — of winning Best Picture. The Academy hates the politics of this film and its director. The votes aren’t there.

But the Oscar broadcast is going to benefit from an audience who might not even usually watch the Oscars tuning in to see if “Sniper” wins. Love it or hate it, if you watch, the Academy wins.

She’s not going to see a dime beyond what she’s already been paid unless Eastwood or Warner Bros. steps up and gifts her, the way Winston Groom was cut in for a chunk of cash after Forest Gump made a zillion dollars. Contractually, he wasn’t entitled to it.

The kind of deal structure that cuts you in when a film hits big is called “First Dollar Gross.” Profits can be made to disappear in studio accounting. The raw box office gross cannot. Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg get First Dollar Gross on their movies. Source material holders, such as Mrs. Kyle, do not get that kind of deal. It’s simply unheard of.

The current numbers for “American Sniper” $200,137.00 USD = Domestic, $47,500,000.00 USD = Foreign.....Total Revenue World Wide = $247,637,000.00 USD!!!

The film is on a massive hot streak....across the world, even in the Middle East!!! Suspect the film will top $300,000,000.00 Worldwide by next weekend.
