Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper scored another stunning victory over its second weekend of wide release. The Warner Bros. /Time Warner TWX -2.14% Inc. war drama earned another $64.365 million over the weekend, which was a weekend-to-weekend drop of just 28%. It has now earned $200.137m domestic. That’s also the biggest non-debut-weekend in history for an R-rated film, easily besting the $53m second Friday of The Passion of the Christ as well the over/under $30m second weekends of Hannibal, The Matrix Reloaded, The Hangover, The Hangover part II, and 300. If there was any question, it is now clear that, inflation and IMAX/PLF bumps notwithstanding, American Sniper is indeed playing like the (all due respect) second coming of The Passion of the Christ. Mel Gibson’s “last days of Jesus” drama from 2004 dropped 36% in 2004 from an $83 million Fri-Sun debut (out of a $125m Wed-Sun debut) to a $53m second Fri-Sun weekend. It ended its twelfth day with $213m domestic. If you want to (unfairly?) play straight ten-day totals, American Sniper now has $200m while The Passion of the Christ had $174m domestic.

There is a certain percentage of repeat viewing, that is hard to quantify, but most presume exists. I liked the movie, but as intense as it was, I have no need or desire to see it again for a long time. At least not in a theater, where you get the full-bore experience and feel every bullet fired.
Me and all the viewers came out of the theater yesterday screaming HOOAH!, running towards the nearest recruiter offices while waving American flags in one hand and a Bible in another, singing God Bless America in between spitting out tobacco juice. /s
How is Selma doing st the box office?
I heard it is racist to go see American Sniper instead of Selma.
I love it when, not just liberal Hollywood, but the whole left in general loses a battle in the culture war, including the LSM.
The culture war means so much to them because as a minority group, they are able to control so much of what happens in our culture today. Things like this expose them for the failed ideology they so crave for the rest of us and the hypocritical power and control they need to implement their failed ideology over us as a free society.

Hollywood is never saddened when a $60 million film brings in $200 million in its first two weeks of wide release.
The Academy, on the other hand, is likely conflicted. The problem is that the Academy Awards telecast tends to bring in more viewers when people feel as though they have a dog in the fight. As it stands right now, American Sniper is the only movie up for the major awards that is an actual hit. Viewers are going to feel cheated if it doesn't win.
The movie, though, made me think of Kipling's "Arithmetic on the Frontier". In it, a hundred years ago, commenting upon the British attempt to control Afghanistan, he noted that the Muslims could replace one of their fighters for a tiny fraction of what it cost the Brits to replace one of theirs. Something to think about.
