Ted Cruz Just Launched His Iowa Campaign
National Journal ^ | January 24, 2015 | Tim Alberta and Shane Goldmacher

The Texas conservative and his team are trying to lock down a state director for his White House run.

DES MOINES -- Ted Cruz's presidential campaign in Iowa is unofficially underway.

The Texas senator and his lieutenants have been making calls to top Iowa activists and consultants for the past two weeks, multiple Republican sources told National Journal, hoping to lock down a state director for his White House campaign.

Cruz has not yet made that critical hire, the sources said.

But he's making other moves in this first nominating state.

At the end of a fiery speech here Saturday to the Iowa Freedom Summit, Cruz instructed his cheering audience to send a text message with the word "Constitution" to the number 33733. Iowans all over the auditorium could be seen whipping out their cell phones and punching keys. Within moments, anyone who sent the text got this reply: "Together let's bring bold, clear leadership to America." The message included a link: " tedcruz.org."

It was an innovative way to collect contact information from masses of committed Iowa conservatives. It also erased any remaining doubts about Cruz's intention to run for president -- even if he downplayed the move, with a smile, when asked about it after his speech.

"What we're doing is, we're working to build a grassroots army in Iowa and all across the country," Cruz said. "Because the only way we're going to turn this country around -- it's not going to come from Washington. It's got to come from the American people. "

Judging from his performance Saturday, Cruz won't have trouble recruiting Iowans for his "army."

The Texas senator received a rock-star reception from the conservative crowd, which began cheering upon the first mention of his name. He delivered a speech full of conservative objectives – "repeal Obamacare" and "abolish the IRS," for instance – that was interrupted repeatedly by applause.

He suggested taking the 110,000 current employees of the IRS and sending them instead to guard the southern border. "Somewhat jokingly," he said of the plan. (The side benefit, he laughed, would the agents would scare away would-be illegal immigrants.)

Most notably, Cruz positioned himself to the right of all his potential rivals in the 2016 field. He warned the audience that all of the Republican contenders would fashion themselves as true conservatives when they are not.

"Talk is cheap," he said of his fellow Republicans. He then drew from the Bible – as he did elsewhere in the speech – saying, "The Word tells us, 'You will know them by their fruit.'" Many in the audience knowingly murmured the words along with him.

"Show me where you stood up and fought," Cruz challenged potential rivals on issue after issue, from Obamacare to gay marriage to the Common Core education standards.

The theme of Cruz's speech was "The Miracle of America" -- a message the senator was road-testing as a potential 2016 campaign slogan.

The message, as delivered here, touched on everything from promoting upward mobility to defending religious liberties to advocating a muscular U.S. foreign policy. Cruz told the crowd that "each of us have seen miracles every day," and shared with the evangelical audience how his father left him and his mother many years ago, only to become a Christian and come back to the family.

Cruz promised the crowd that even though times are tough in America, a "miracle" could be on the horizon. He said the country's current challenges are surmountable when considering the historic triumphs over Britain in the Revolutionary War and the Nazis in World War II.

"We have done it before," Cruz exclaimed. "We can do it again!"

Dang! Try not to attach him to anyone....let him carry his Banner solo....he has it all by himself... though Sarah can help.

I trust him when he gets elected to appoint the people he wants...which no doubt will likely include her...but he needs to be the one in the spotlight. Imo.

I understand where you’re coming from....but we need a leader for this nation...if he wanted to remain a Senatorm as you think, he would not be running to win the Pres.

He’s the only one who has all the makings to run...to win...to take onthe Hillary Machine.....as well as the Gop candidates running.....he’ll not give an inch on unless he can later turn it back on them.

So no he’s done his work as A senator and “showed” us what he is capable of doing...being unafraid to take them all on.

I don’t believe these things about Walker...even he said he’s till rough around the edges.....
Cruz still outperforms him ...plus he knows all too well how the Demorats work things...he’s been fighting them as well as the old boys.

...”Scott Walker is a great guy but has produced no plans to box up and seal and bury the communists who have brought us to our knees over the last 6 years. Only a Constitutionalist can un-do the damage, and we only have ONE of those now, Ted Cruz”....

Exactly...besides that Cruz doesn’t always have to check with Attorneys ...he knows enough off the top of his head to use his skill even in the debates and otherwise.

Which is the historical winning ticket in America?

Tea party voters are in both Cruz and Walkers...but Cruz is going after all the grassroots people and many of them are not Tea Party people now.

The Tea Party around my area, and further south, have all but fizzled out. So I’m all for Cruz and his full Grass Roots campaign. He’s going after “Patriotic Americans” who ‘love’ this country....not as a Tea PArty Candidate....he’s tied to no one group ...but sure is a Conservative standing on the Constitution...and that’s a strong foundation.

Yup, they are orchestrating the same thing again and we are falling for it by fighting amongst ourselves.

I really wish all the candidates would just pick one amongst themselves and stand behind that one - for the good of the country.

“Cruz has all our enemies in his sights. That’s why the Left trashes Cruz and leaves Walker alone. They know who their henchman is, and that he’s coming for them.”

Whoever the liberals - in both parties - pick to vilify is who they are afraid of. And THAT needs to be who we stand behind.

Well I'm in his court all the way...and after he announces I will also give him 'lots of room' to attract the public overall.... As we all should...he'll do it his way once in the seat of the Presidency...and these guys are "OUT OF OUR HOUSE!!!! We got them out of the other House we can get them out of this one too!!!!

Yeah, that’s my concern too.

Instead, let Walker be head of the Governor’s Assn .. and have him teach the others how to do what he has done.

No where in the Constitution does it say a presidential candidate must be a governor.

Jimmy Carter was a governor.

Bill Clinton was a governor.

Governors do NOT necessarily make better presidents. It’s what is in the heart that makes a great president. We need an intelligent LEADER who LOVES AMERICA !

I don’t believe these things about Walker

Belief is a choice. I've presented the facts about Walker. You can choose your beliefs, but you cannot choose your facts.

It's childish to believe that Walker's proven toughness, resourcefulness and courage in the face of overwhelming and oft violent opposition somehow harms the conservative cause. It doesn't hurt Cruz either.

Same team, different players. I see Walker as the stronger candidate of the two. You don't. The primaries will prove it, but we cannot let the Bush/Romney moneymen cabal do what they did last time and kill our candidates, paving the way for another bum ticket. Some of them are current FReepers playing us now again.

Agreed?

Walker won Wisconsin with an ever growing number of Reagan Democrats. If you like Reagan his greatest political skill was winning the group called Reagan Democrats.

Walker fits the historical precedent of a conservative POTUS who through savvy campaigning won Reagan Democrats.

That’s how you win a national election, too.
