BALTIMORE (WJZ) A health warning. The extremely contagious measles virus is back. An outbreak that started at Disneyland is starting to sweep the country.
Christie Ileto has the push for children to get vaccinated.
Measles was thought to have been eliminated in the U.S. 15 years ago. Now its back, targeting those who havent been immunized.
The outbreak that started in Californias Disneyland is expanding. At least 75 cases of measles span six states.
Its scary to think the happiest place on Earth is infected with measles, one Disney employee said.
For this Disney employee, knowing co-workers are infected is cause for concern.
Measles has a 21-day incubation period, meaning people can travel far before they know theyre sick.
Were seeing the resurgence of measles because a lot of the parents are not getting their children vaccinated, said Dr. Peter Andrews, Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Andrews says that problem is prime. In Maryland, all students K-12 must get two shots of the measles vaccine.
It just didnt make sense to me, said one Annapolis mom.
In a revealing interview with WJZ, an Annapolis mom explained why she didnt vaccinate her kids.
I didnt understand why a little human had to get so many drugs at one time, she said.
Still, the vaccine proves very effective if given at two doses.
Doctors say the virus is highly contagious. For instance, if someone has the measles and doesnt cover their mouth when they sneeze, they can pass it on to anyone standing nearby.
Symptoms like fever, cough and rash soon follow.
The younger, the older, the immune compromised. Those are the three target areas that really can get sick and die, said Dr. Andrews.
Most people who have already had the measles or got the vaccine are not at risk.
God bless illegals, right?
The idiot libs refuse to vaccinate their kids and now their kids area using the price.
I don’t think illegal aliens are forcing parents not to vaccinate their children.
Look at CDC numbers between 2012-2014...its not about vaccinations...its about the impact of the surge of illegals. Around 50 cases in 2012... and now 644 in 2014.
Like Central America???
So what?
BS
It’s a dual problem that creates a big one.
Unimmunized hosts are like dry leaves in a forest. The green (vaccinated folk) won’t burn and the dry won’t burst into flames without cause. The illegal is just the discarded cigarette butt, unwatched campfire, etc etc. Once the dry leaves get burning the green follows.
The solution is to vaccinate your children.
The elephant in the room that NONE dare to mention is that the illegals come from countries that have pi$$ poor, practically non-existent vaccination programs.
The don’t have to force parents not to vaccinate, they just tell them to head norte, the gringos will do it gratis.
That SoCal is practically overrun with illegals and that these same illegals now outnumber our own citizen children in many schools, are in clinics, government offices, etc. doesn’t compute with you?
Another disease that the US medical system had practically eradicated begins a stunning comeback...
Uhh huh....!
HA!
You think liberal anti-vaxxers are superstitious...you oughta go and try your bleeding heart tactics with Central American mestizos and see how that works out for you.
What happened to the media’s ebola epidemic in the USA? Now measles. bird flu , global warming .....
The media is the disease
why??? every kid in my generation had them and we didn’t die, just itched like crazy, missed school.
Guess we’ll just have to pay more to vaccinate illegals at the border.
The Measles Vaccination Rate in The United States is 91%
The Measles Vaccination Rate in Mexico is 89%
Now, pease explain the mathematics behind illegal aliens being responsible for this Measles outbreak.
They need to be very sure that this outbreak is of “standard” measles. Measles is caused by a paramyxovirus of the genus Morbillivirus. Other species in the genus include canine distemper. Many members of the genus cause disease.
If this is a different strain of measles, it could be different enough to not be affected by the typical vaccine.
Just as bad, if it is still the “standard” virus, that runs its course in the typical way, it might be a drug resistant form, resistant to the one antiviral drug that could be used for those with immune deficiency or a particularly bad case of the disease (even though it has not been approved by the FDA for that use.)
Measles symptoms begin about 8 to 12 days after coming in contact with someone who is infected. A person with measles can spread the virus to others from one to two days before any symptoms begin (or three to five days before the rash) to four days after the rash appears.
A final note: Do not use aspirin in children with measles because of the risk of developing a rare liver and brain problem called Reye’s syndrome.
Uhhmm thousands came not from Mexico, but other regions through Mexico on train
“The elephant in the room that NONE dare to mention is that the illegals come from countries that have pi$$ poor, practically non-existent vaccination programs.”
In the US 91% of kids are vaccinated for Measles.
In Mexico, 89% of kids are vaccinated for Measles.
