The House is set to vote next week on what some Republicans are proudly calling the toughest border security bill ever.
But once the roll is called and the measure is passed, then what?
Not yet a month into the 114th Congress, Republican leaders plans to advance border security legislation are sparking some speculation this could be the first installment in the GOPs long-promised piecemeal approach to fixing the immigration system.
Just what Speaker John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, and his allies have in mind could have some effect on what sort of support the pending bill receives.
The bill, sponsored by Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul of Texas, would, among other things, impose harsh penalties for federal agencies that fail to meet certain requirements. One mandate would be achieving operational control which means preventing every single illegal entry across the Southern border within five years.
Republicans who want to tackle the immigration issue, despite having come up short in the previous Congress, say passing McCauls bill will help make the task more palatable this time around: Many members say they wont even look at fixing other areas of the nations flawed immigration laws until they are guaranteed more border enforcement.
I actually think this makes other pieces easier to vote for, if youre comfortable that an adequate security piece is in place, said Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla. I dont think doing border security and stopping would be the appropriate thing to do when we know there are other areas where we can get some things done.

They'll play the same game with this one. Appease the rabble, then get what they really want passed.
“some republicans”?
I’d like to know, specifically, which republicans are calling it that.
Why do we need another border-based law? We already have many that encompass thousands of pages and millions of words.
How about we enforce those?
"Harsh" penalties?
Like what? A letter of reprimand in every employee's file?
If they can pass enough pages of legislation, they can use them to build a fence along the southern border...
so soon. ah well, that break for us between the GOP taking over and the dems losing didn’t last long. time to get on the phones again.
” Just a historical reminder, the Secure Fence Act was signed into law in 2006, and was then subsequently defunded and gutted. “
BUMP the truth, and IIRC, it called for 700 miles of double fencing.
NOW, the GOPe wants to
knock down 66 miles of fence
build 27 miles of fence (instead of 700 miles)
10 billion to bet on horses (might as well be)
” Is this the same “border security” bill that tears down hundreds of miles of fence and replaces it with dozens of miles of fence?”
Close enough : )
These people are all liars, tearing down the border fences that exist is not tough
This is the start of the long betrayal. That’s all piecemeal is.
“said Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla. ‘I dont think doing border security and stopping would be the appropriate thing to do when we know there are other areas where we can get some things done.’”
Cole is telegraphing the Chamber of Commerce/Suckerberg plan—pass a “tough” border enforcement bill (which will not be enforced) as a fig leaf. But you can’t stop there. After all, we’ve got to fix our “broken” immigration system by importing even more masses of cheap labor in order to displace American workers who want too much in salaries/wages. And, of course, amnesty for the illegals so we can “bring them out of the shadows.”
Sadly, you are right.
