Chris Mortensen reports, the NFL has found that 11 of the Patriots footballs used in Sundays AFC title game were under-inflated by 2 lbs each, per league sources.
The league says the New England Patriots used deflated footballs during their AFC Championship Game win over the Indianapolis Colts.
They say that 11 balls were under-inflated by two pounds each, according to ESPNs Chris Mortensen.
We are not commenting at this time, Greg Aiello, the NFLs senior vice president of communications, said to ESPN.

It ain’t cheatin unless you get caught in the act - Pats win, Super Bowl bound, millions of dollars in the kitty . . Colts never would have won anyway - they suck
Several questions or thoughts:
1. Why dont team managers check the balls they will be using before the game?? In my coaching days including a stint as an asst.college coach, the managers checked everything.
2. If the balls were inflated in a warm room and then taken out into a cold stadium they would naturally loose some pressure.
3. What effect does a slightly deflated ball (which is the case) have on the game??
The ball didn’t affect the win/lose but possible the spread and integrity of the game.
Belichick’s gotta go IMO.
That have been handling footballs for many many years every play all season.
I know that. My point is why didn’t they notice the ‘problem’ with the balls?
Part of me wants to go all ‘purity of the game’ and then I think fondly of Gaylord Perry throwing a spitter when I was a kid growing up.
I think I do draw a line, though, certainly steroid use seems to be inappropriately cheating. As though there is something like appropriate cheating.
Well One Thing’s for Certain:
Bellechicks Got Balls!
If there is not any video evidence of New England personal tampering with the New England footballs then I say this is a non-issue. Also were all the Colts footballs tested? if not then this accusation has no merit.
The score was what? 45-7? They could have been using Nerf footballs and the Patriots STILL would probably have won by at least three touchdowns.
You inferred “holding” is cheating. It’s not.
Its against the rules, a flag is thrown, penalties are assessed and the game goes on. As you say - its part of the game.
Cheating is an entirely more serious matter. IMO
I agree I was saying the same thing not only did the officials handle the ball every down and every play but they have been doing it for years and years and they should notice if a ball is under inflated.
::scratch scratch::
The old Oakland Raiders used to say, “If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying hard enough”
A scale? It measures the total weight of the ball and enclosed air. Pressure may change, but the number of molecules inside the ball does not.
You know that that must have made Bellicheat toss in his sleep that night...
I heard an engineering professor on the radio today say that it would be almost impossible to detect by feel a two pound difference in air pressure in a football.
Where are the results on the testing of the Colts footballs? If none was done and the chain of custody has been broken, this is a non issue.
I’m not an attorney, but I have seen plenty of commercials for attorneys, so let me say this...With 11 of 12 balls provided by the Patriots underinflated by 2 pounds, the preponderance of the evidence suggests that the Patriots were up to no good. Toss in the fact that the officials weighed the balls before the game and found them to be within the acceptable limits, points to some interesting in-game tampering. That, or the officials were in on this as well...which is why the league is going to come down hard on the Patriots for this...
