Long War Journal reports that the Obama administration has released Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri from a U.S. prison – not from Gitmo, but from a civilian jail after a federal terrorism conviction.
Al-Marri is an al-Qaeda operative who was planted as a “sleeper” in the United States by Khalid Sheikh Mohamed to await instructions on carrying out a second wave of attacks after the 9/11 atrocities – against water reservoirs, the New York Stock Exchange, U.S. military academies, and other targets. The Justice Department quietly sprung him on Friday so he could return to his native Qatar, a country the administration regards as a crucial counterterrorism ally . . . and a country that is notorious for providing material support to jihadists.
While appalling, this news was inevitable. The al-Marri case was a cause célèbre for the Bush-deranged Left because he was detained as an enemy combatant, rather than arrested and charged in court as a criminal defendant, despite being apprehended in the United States. Upon taking office, Obama ordered him transferred from military detention under the law of war to the civilian criminal-justice system. Once there, he was given a bargain-basement plea deal by Attorney General Eric Holder and his minions.

The judge was a bleeding heart Clinton appointee who let him off with half time because the poor baby had such a rough time in prison after helping al Qaeda burn thousands of people to death.
Judge Mihm scheduled sentencing for July 30, 2009. At sentencing, al-Marri faces up to 15 years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a life term of supervised release, and a $100 mandatory special assessment.
“Without a doubt, this case is a grim reminder of the seriousness of the threat we as a nation still face,” said Attorney General Holder. “But it also reflects what we can achieve when we have faith in our criminal justice system and are unwavering in our commitment to the values upon which the nation was founded and the rule of law.”
“The facts admitted by al-Marri today demonstrate that he attended terrorist training camps, learned al-Qaeda tradecraft and was dispatched by the highest levels of al-Qaeda to carry out its terrorist objectives in America,” said David Kris, Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division. “The many agents, analysts and prosecutors who worked tirelessly on this investigation and prosecution deserve special thanks for their efforts.”
“Ali al-Marri was an al-Qaeda ‘sleeper’ operative working on U.S. soil and directed by the chief planner of the 9-11 attacks. Al-Marri researched the use of chemical weapons, potential targets and maximum casualties,” said Arthur M. Cummings, II, Executive Assistant Director of the FBI’s National Security Branch. “The investigation that disrupted his plot began with tips from local police partners. The investigation that followed took the FBI agents and task force officers around the globe to develop the intelligence to prevent any potential attack and the evidence to bring al-Marri to justice.”
“Ali al-Marri today admitted that he traveled to central Illinois as an al-Qaeda operative the day before the Sept.11, 2001, attacks to plan and prepare for future acts of terrorism within the United States,” said Jeffrey B. Lang, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Central District of Illinois. “Al-Marri’s admissions, in open court and after again being advised of his right to a jury trial, confirm the many details of the government’s findings as a result of the exemplary investigative efforts by the FBI and other agencies.”

Al-Marri as ‘the point of contact for AQ operatives arriving in the US for September 11 follow-on operations.’ KSM described Al-Marri as ‘the perfect sleeper agent because he has studied in the United States, had no criminal record, and had a family with whom he could travel.’... The Qatari national had returned to the United States on Sept. 10, 2001, to pick up a graduate degree in computer information systems from Peoria’s Bradley University.... Al-Marri’s apartment was filled with Islamic jihadist materials. His computer included bookmarked Web sites for hazardous chemicals, computer hacking and fake IDs, according to court documents. Bookmarks in an almanac marked entries for dams, reservoirs and railroads.”
Newsweek mentioned another Illinois connection: “The terror network allegedly dispatched... Jose Padilla to scout out the possibility of building a radiological device, a so-called dirty bomb (arrested at Chicago’s O’Hare airport in early 2002, he is being held as an ‘enemy combatant’ in military jail).”
If Luciano is correct that only three alleged terrorists have been named in the U.S. as enemy combatants, two were apprehended in Illinois.
Remember also, in December 2001 the Treasury Department and FBI froze assets and confiscated records of the Global Relief Foundation in Bridgeview and the Benevolence International Foundation in Palos Hills for alleged links to terrorist financing. This marked only the fifth block of assets at that time by the U.S. government post 9-11.
How did the Illinois General Assembly and Governor Blagojevich respond?
In the midst of FBI terrorist arrests in Chicago and Peoria, confiscation of suspected terrorist records in Palos Hills and Bridgeview, an unparalleled state budget crisis, and a corruption investigation of public officials stemming from a van explosion and burning deaths of six Illinois children caused by a driver who couldn’t speak English, they passed a law in May giving in-state tuition status to illegal aliens.
The GA also toyed with giving driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. Fortunately, public pressure stifled that great idea. The GA might be interested in another tidbit by Newsweek: “Qaeda operatives seem to be dangerous drivers. [Iyman] Faris was busted for speeding in 1996 and for ‘failure to control his vehicle’ in 1997, when he flipped his vehicle on a highway exit ramp, local officials say. An arrest for drunken driving marred the otherwise clean record of another suspected sleeper agent whose story is a chilling example of Al Qaeda’s foothold in the American heartland.”
That “sleeper agent” - the “chilling example of Al Qaeda’s foothold in the American heartland” - was al-Marri.
