WILMINGTON, N.C. - An Air Force veteran who served in Kuwait found a note on her car Friday criticizing her for parking in a veterans-only parking spot in Wilmington.

Mary Claire Caine told WECT-TV that she returned to her car from shopping at Harris Teeter to find a note plastered to her front window from a person identifying themselves as a "Wounded Vet."

It read, "Maybe [you] can't read the sign you parked in front of ... This space is reserved for those who fought for America ... not you. Thanks, Wounded Vet."

Caine, who served in Kuwait and on the flight line of the F-117 Nighthawk, said her heart sank.

Not sure what the rules are but I would think you have to have a plate or sticker that proves you are a wounded Vet.

this was a parking space at Harris Teeter in NC... NC is a state with lots of veterans... any veteran, wounded or not, can take the parking... he/she does not have to prove it... the person who left the note is a jacka$$... she had the right to use that parking...

There have been so many stolen valor cases that I guess I wonder if the writer of the note was really a wounded vet.

The only stickers on my truck are a NOTW [Not of This World], Gadsden flag and RaceFace [mountain bike equipment company]. My priorities are on display...

I consider it a priviledge to have served.

I don’t go around looking for any special treatment nor do I openly advertise my prior service unless it comes up in polite conversation.

The note writer can probably tell some tales about first being in the Green Berets and then Seal Team Six. Riiiiiight.

I don’t mean this as any type of knock on her or veterans, but I don’t like the idea of “veterans’ only” parking spaces. We are becoming too classified of a society where not only the disabled, but “moms with babies” and senior citizens and now veterans get special parking. It just doesn’t sit right with me.

“Vet’s usually have some sort of sticker on their car with the service ... I’ve seen cars parked in vet’s slots at Home Depot that had no sticker denoting what service they were in.”

I’m a disabled Nam Vet, and I have nothing on my car...

34 year female service member with two fake knees. I would never consider parking in such a spot. I have never deployed, been shot at etc. Worst I’ve been through is a week in chem gear and MRE’s for meals. I barely even used my temporary handicap pass after my knee surgeries. There is always someone worse off than me.

I’ve never seen a “veteran’s parking place.” I’ve seen handicap or disabled parking places which require a handicap tag hanging in the car, which are for all disabled or handicapped folk, not just veterans.

"Vet’s usually have some sort of sticker on their car with the service ."

Says you.

I went 45 years before I got a veterans plate, just to piss off liberals that still hate the VN war. I never brought attention in any way to my service before that.

I understand her anger, but she should be glad the note writer didn’t return. Whoever was rude and pompous enough to scribble such a note may be low enough to try injuring her. I’ve heard many stories of people trying to run someone down in the parking lot after a selected space was filled up. Too many kooks out there.

I’ve never seen a “veteran’s parking place.”

I hadn't either until I found some at the local Home Depot. I was sort of curious as to what would be sufficient proof and learned that my state (Idaho) now has a special driver's license that identifies the bearer as a military veteran. You show the DMV your DD214 when you apply and they give it to you. It isn't a plate, it's actually on the driver's license card.

And no, I'd never heard of it before that.
