Good lord! I wouldn’t know where to start with this article. So I better not.

Dear Pricilla,

I'm tired of suppressing myself as well. Tell your bros and sisters to stop making babies when 1. they can't afford it and 2. are not married. Tell your bros they should beat up or threaten brown people who are smaller than they are. Tell your bros not to beat up a cop. The cop will shoot back and will aim to kill. Tell your bros to pull up their damn pants.

Need I go on?

When you compare her taste in music to what other blacks are listening to, I think she has already suppressed herself.

hoping to spark a “conscious conversation.”

I get the feeling she was hoping to spark evidence for her next article that non-black people suck.

I don’t want this rage to fester into bitterness

Too late honey child.

Ever think that everyone suppresses parts of themselves in order to get along? No, I see that you have not.

You want a tight little world where everyone dresses like you, eats like you, cares about the stuff you do, thinks like you do.

You want a cookie cutter world.

Guess what?

Welcome to diversity.

The article was painful to read. The author really needs to just grow up. Grow up a lot.

Just another racist black woman who has been taught her whole life, that it’s all Whitey’s Fault.

Reading this is a sad experience. A person who is so convinced everyone around her carries an evil (racism) that she has shut off the world at large (except her “tiny black universe”.)

Everything she imagines others reacting negatively to, from eating fried chicken to listening to Aretha Franklin, to even discussing Ferguson is all in her own head.

How does she *know* non-black people will react negatively to any of it, when she hasn’t even tried to share such likes and thoughts with anyone? Each and every prison is a construct of her own mind.

Hence the rage that is virtually palatable. No human being can go through life with pent up rage like that. It’s eventually going to explode. And the real shame of it is, it’s rage over literally nothing.

No one would care if she ate fried chicken or listened to Aretha Franklin, or even gave her thoughts about Ferguson (which she didn’t even do here!)

All rage and fury, truly signifying nothing.

Disgusting article, bit hittable. Maybe some white should. Might shut up her...at least for a few minutes anyway.

I have learned through experience that cross cultural exchange and ethnic diversity are highly overrated. :-)

“... I might have to explain...why I like Miles Davis, Nina Simone and Marvin Gaye.”

Maybe there’s no magazines, TV or radio in their apartment.

Because about 95% of the media in the US is minority oriented.

BTW, Years ago I went to a Miles Davis concert in Cleveland. About 400 people there... only TWO black couples. Actually, most black people I speak to about this stuff don’t know who he was.

Also, I used to work with a black girl who didn’t know who Mahalia Jackson was or Jesse Norman, etc. No clue!!

Diversity! You aren’t being diverse young lady.

Us evil white males are continuously brow beaten into submission about how we’re supposed to “celebrate cultural differences”, yet you BMW about reciprocation...pretty much what I expected from the “other side”.

She should just leave then.

If I was one of her room mates and had to hear Aretha Franklin screeching R E S P E CT and smelling fried chicken grease everyday, I’d have to just leave too, but then, that’s just me .

She doesn’t need to suppress herself. She can open up to me - and I will open up to her. I’ll point out Mike Brown was a thug who tried to take a cop’s gun and died for it, just as I would if I acted like that. I’ll point out Gardner was obese and had heart problems, and white guys like that who resist arrest sometimes die of heart attacks too. I’ll tell her I like fried chicken, so she doesn’t need to “eat my leftover fried chicken outside the office” - just share.

I’ll tell her I’m tired of suppressing my anger that 3% of the population commits 50% of the murders. I’ll tell her she can “use “sister girl language””, but I’ll feel free not to understand - or care. Why? Because she has no claim on me that ANY human doesn’t have. She is JUST a human. She isn’t special because she is black.

Hell, we all have to suppress ourselves to get along. If my wife and I didn't do it almost everyday, our marriage wouldn't have lasted a week. Almost didn't, in fact, as I managed not to suppress my wise-cracking mouth just after the honey moon,

42 years this coming September.

So my heart just bleeds for her. But I have an idea. She doesn't have to suppress herself, but can't ask her white acquaintances to, either. Make the deal right up-front with them.

Otherwise, I will not suppress myself around people that think I should be worried about their problems more than my own.

When her new roommate said “What’s happening in Ferguson?” I heard some kid got shot or something like that,” she missed the opportunity to take the conversation further. Instead, she stayed silent, chose to paint her roommate as a racist because he wasn’t overflowing with in-depth knowledge about the happenings in Ferguson. She was raised in a black city, home-schooled, went to a small black college, worked for Essence Magazine, and she looks down on whites because they don’t know or care to know what’s going on in a black community hundreds of miles away? Must be nice to have nothing to worry about in your life except what’s currently going on in the news. No mention of ever having any white friends back home. It appears to me she has nobody but her parents to blame for not ever having long-term interaction with whites while she was growing up. All she knows is what she was taught by her parents. She’s the one with the blinders on. How many white people murdered by blacks can she name? My guess is none.

Apparently she is annoyed that she has to suppress her inner bigot.
