Yes, I think he deserves credit for making the connection between Gandhi’s ideas of nonviolent resistance and the traditionally Christian ideas that were summed up by classical liberalism. It is always good to have more paths to redress our grievances with the government before we have to resort to violence.

I have this news picture of a black girl saying just that when asked about MLK jr. and what he’s famous for.
If they wanted a holiday then they should have called it “civil rights day” because it was more than just MLK doing it. It was the famous, not so famous, blacks and whites who were trying to change the system. Yet, none of them get honored or remembered.
Well, there’s always Juneteenth.
Here is a letter MLK wrote in 1956. MLK liked to try maintain appearing nuetral, but I think he signals his democrat voting pretty clearly here.
“Dear Miss Sloan:
Thanks for your very kind letter of September 17, making inquiry concerning the way the Negro will vote in the coming election. I am of the impression that
the Negro voter will go largely for the Democratic Party. I haven’t fully decided which candidate I will vote for. In the past I have always voted the Democratic ticket. At this point I am still in a state of indecision. Stevenson seems to be more forthright on the race question than Eisenhower, but the Democratic Party is so inexplicably bound to the South that it does leave doubt in the minds of those interested in civil rights. Let us all hope that the candidate most concerned with the welfare for all people of America will win the election.”

His parents did name him after Martin Luther so there is that.
MLK was not a republican.

She still gets the facts wrong about blacks mostly being republican before JFK, but so many people do.

Granddaddy convinced a large block of blacks to vote for President John Kennedy after he helped to get my uncle out of jail during those turbulent days. Uncle M. L. tended to vote Democrat, but remained independent because he found weaknesses in both parties.””

Jimmy Kimmel Live just had a segment about what people thought of MLK’s speech he gave this morning. Out of 14, half of them said they liked it.
