Michael Moore Fires Back at ‘American Sniper’ Accusations: I Didn’t Mention the Film

Michael Moore defended a statement he made on Sunday that "snipers aren't heroes" by refuting the interpretation that he was weighing in on the debate surrounding Clint Eastwood's "American Sniper."

"My dad always said, 'Snipers are cowards. They don't believe in a fair fight. Like someone coming up from behind you and coldcocking you. Just isn't right. It's cowardly to shoot a person in the back,'" Moore wrote on Facebook late Sunday with a link to tweets. "But Deadline Hollwood and the Hollywood Reporter turned that into stories about how I don't like Clint Eastwood's new film, 'American Sniper.' I didn't say a word about 'American Sniper' in my tweets."

Just for clarification, that sniper was an American GI that thought he was aiming in on a Nazi Zeppelin.

But honestly now, how can anyone validate that claim? The US Graves Services sent a telegram to the family saying "Please expect casket soon STOP contents include dead uncle STOP by the way he was killed by sniper STOP"?

His uncle's commanding officer wrote a letter to the bereaved explaining not how he gave his life in service of his country, but "Oh, by the way Milton Moore was shot in the back by a sniper..."?

The uncle's fellow GIs visited the family of their dead comrade and recounted the tale of how that German/Japanese sniper picked off Uncle Milton as he sat there wolfing down a family size bag of Fritos?

I'd think that investigation is warranted into this claim that Michael Moore had an uncle who served in WWII to begin with, not to mention whether he actually died in combat. Hell, I'm not convinced he was even on our side.

A lot earlier than 1862. The Brits were appalled at the way colonial militia used sharphooters to directly target officers and scouts.

Conventional rules of war at the time dictated that officers be captured alive and be treated well. Washington and the continental army were holding to those rules but the militia was doing what worked.

In those days your average infantry soldier tended to be a pure follower and the elimination of an officer tended to put troops into disarray.

As a young British Officer Washington himself got into trouble over the killing of a captive French officer.

One of the simple rules that I adhere to is: never insult a group of people who are highly skilled at destroying targets from great distance with high powered firearms and may very well have members who are suffering from PTSD. Considering Michael Moore’s girth I would estimate that he is vulnerable from a distance considerably further out than the average Muslim Terrorist.

My other problem with MM's statement and overall sentiments is this notion that surprise attack (eg. a sniper round) is somehow cowardly. Because of the ROE in place at the time, as I understand it Mr. Kyle had to verify all his targets were combatants. As far as I'm concerned if you're carrying a weapon in a war zone, you're a combatant. If you're a combatant in a war zone, your life is at risk and you can be engaged at any time, in any way.

Anyone who has served knows the sort of people these snipers shoot. In the movie, that includes a woman who hands a grenade to a child for an attack on soldiers, a thug planting a roadside bomb, armed terrorists in the streets torturing a child, armed terrorists on rooftops trying to kill American soldiers. Michael Moore pretends that he wants our soldiers to engage in a "fair fight" against terrorists who hide behind children when they are not strapping bombs to the children, but I don't. I want the Americans to come home alive, and the terrorists to all die. If the terrorists have no chance to use a power drill on a child's head while the father watches (a situation in the movie in which no one got off a shot in time), I'm okay with that.
