Barack Obama enters the final two years of his presidency with a blemish on his legacy that looks impossible to erase: the decline of the middle class he has promised to rescue.
The revival of middle-class jobs has been one of Obama's mantras since he took office in 2009 fighting the worst economic crisis in generations. It was a major theme of his last State of the Union address and is expected to feature in the one scheduled for Tuesday.
Administration officials said on Saturday the president would propose higher capital gains taxes, new fees on large financial firms, and other measures to raise $320 billion for programs and tax breaks aimed at the middle class.
Obama's administration can take credit for stabilizing the U.S. economy, which is growing again and last year added jobs at the fastest clip since 1999.
But for the middle class the scars of the recession still run deep. Federal Reserve survey data show families in the middle fifth of the income scale now earn less and their net worth is lower than when Obama took office.
In the six years through 2013, over the recession and recovery that have spanned Obama's tenure, jobs have been added at the top and bottom of the wage scale, a Reuters analysis of labor statistics shows. In the middle, the economy has shed positions - whether in traditional trades like machining or electrical work, white-collar jobs in human resources, or technical ones like computer operators.
The trend is in plain sight in Dalton, Georgia, a manufacturing hub 90 miles (145 km)north of Atlanta. Massive factories that made it "the carpet capital of the world," were slammed by the collapse of the housing bubble.

Especially the latter. They have received Trillions in unearned entitlements and welfare giveaways since he took power. He hated the Middle Class, and always will. It is now being systematically destroyed.

However, that decline has not been as easy as I think the dems were expecting. And now, it appears we may come roaring back .. if the GOPe don’t sell us out.
Most of the middle class around me are using credit card just to survive. Is that a decline of the middle class? I damn sure believe so when the charges are for necessities to maintain home and equipment.
When Bush was President, my wife and I had a combined 6-figure income. After 5 years of unemployment and food stamps, I’ve finally gotten back on my feet and am making half of what we were making during the Bush years.
The decline was well underway under the Bush Admin....
Since that time, most of middle America has been economically gang banged and it gets worse.
The GOP are so damn fragmented that nothing good will come out of the Senate or House that will stick or have any effect on slowing our King, King Obama the communists black Muslim traitor.
Raising taxes, increasing spending, more government programs are exactly the opposite of what should be done.

Just going to the grocery store these days is a shock! My little raise won’t come close to making up for it - and yet I see people who have been imported from non-western countries, most likely living off “federal” money, strolling around in the middle of the day...with their kids (population time bombs)...leisurely shopping.
There is no rational for this that benefits hard working American citizens.

The decline of the white middle class under this administration is conscious, willful and maliciously planned by the administration’s controlling liberal donors. This administration has initiated an ongoing Third World conquest which was the true meaning of the statement “the transformation of America.” Simply look at those placed in positions of authority-Third World!
We are being raped. But glad you are recovering! I am working full time during a time in my life when people used to think they’d be on a permanent vacation. And, as my sister says, I need to count my blessings.
One does not create upward mobility by punishing achievement. The middle class is primarily entrepreneurial, not primarily labor.

Exactly .. that’s why this admin has NO PLANS TO HELP THE MIDDLE CLASS. They say it will .. but they have lied so much about so many things .. you cannot convince me they give a rats’ rear end about the middle class.
Communism teaches .. destruction of the middle class. If people would just look around the world, they would see all these tyrants who HAVE NO MIDDLE CLASS in their population. All you see is the very wealthy and the very poor.
That is what the current admin wants for America .. and the GOP are the group they want for the “very poor”. I wish the GOPe would figure that out.

Strange thing is, Obama isn't running in 2016 and he is working very hard to make lots of enemies in his second term. Enemies that are likely to see all Democrats as enemies because the Congressional Democrats have supported Obama at every turn.
Don't you worry about that; lord Obama is working hard to stamp out that growth!

One of the things we predicted here on your website back in 2009 Jim was that ObamaCare would destroy healthcare, increase government control, soar costs, ration care, decimate private practices, and never work.
Where I work, there was a lunchtime debate about getting rid of ObamaCare. The liberals around us all had the same argument: "Sooo, what are they gonna do?! Take away health insurance for millions now that they have it?"
This seems to be the mindset: once we get the citizen hooked and addicted, we can enslave them forever.
