SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) A Southern California high school basketball coach has been suspended and faces accusations of mercilessly running up the score after his team won a game 161-2, one of the most lopsided scores in state history.
Arroyo Valley High girls' coach Michael Anderson was suspended for two games after the victory last week against Bloomington High.
Anderson said that he wasn't trying to run up the score or embarrass the opposition. His team had won four previous games by at least 70 points, and Bloomington had already lost a game by 91.

Good approach, unless the third stringers start hitting the 3 pointers. Then you get accused of showing off.
Anther case of liberal logic all games must be rigged.
How is that even possible? They would have to score VERY quickly on nearly every possession. The other team’s defense just standing there with their arms up would make it tough to do.
Violates “equality,” a dogma of the left which says that all outcomes should be “equal” even if the abilities of the participants are not equal.
Participation trophies for everyone!
According to the article, they used a full court press the entire first half and ran the score up to 104 to 1.
The "winning" coach is a butthead. He shouldn't be suspended, he should be fired.
No, the losing coach should be fired for having such a bad team. The losing coach could have called the game at halftime if he was such a pansy. Out in the big bad real world there are winners and losers. The only career you get to slide with a participation ribbon is in government employment.
The losing coach may very well be fired.
The winning coach is not fit to teach young people. I have been a coach at the high school level and have been on both sides of blowout wins and losses. You don’t run up the score if you are on the winning side, and you don’t quit if you are on the losing side. Those are the unwritten laws of athletic competition at the high school level and below. Honorable men and women who are worthy of leading teams abide by these concepts.
When the Colts win 65 to 3 over New England today will anyone suggest the Colts coach did something wrong?
There must be a ton of “dishonorable” coaches then. I regularly see huge blow outs in high school sports scores.
Bottom line, sometimes there are huge disparities in talent between teams at the high school level. The snow ball effect also kicks in once one team get a big lead. It’s easy to second guess a coach when looking at a blow out, after the fact. Sometimes they just happen and no one is being dishonorable.
You are correct. I’m guessing most of the posts here are coming from those who rarely attend youth sports.

If that’s true, should be no problem for you to quickly post ten recent, 50+ wins from the local source that you get your high school scores from.
I’m with you. The winning coach displayed cruelty bordering on psychopathology. Before flaming idiots jump in . . . armed combat is the ultimate contest. You are allowed to kill your opponent in war. But. You are not allowed by any convention of civilized people to mutilate bodies, dismember pieces of corpses for war trophies. Running a full-court press to get over 100 points is the basketball equivalent. There’s no practice value in it. It’s perverse.
And so are the people applauding it. And blaming the demoralized victims. Sheesh.
Highlight of the year was smoking one of those teams in the playoffs. It was a good lesson for both teams. I was vocal when we had it wrapped up: no more stealing, it's over...final score was 13-5. They beat us twice in the regular season by scores of 15-2 and 13-4.
My wife won't let me coach anymore, I'm too tough. Lol. Four moms asked me to coach again, their sons thought I was the best coach they ever had.

It’s a nice feeling to know you made a difference in a kids life. Well done.
There are a lot of huge blow outs. When your team gets ahead you play your bench. If your bench is still killing them, maybe you play four man?
The biggest problem; what is the purpose of a scholastic sports team? If it merely to pound opponents into the ground, maybe you need to rethink your program. The reality is, most teams will never make the finals let alone have a winning season. Furthermore, most players will never play organized ball after high school (the odds of getting a college scholarship are low). With that in mind, what is the purpose of the program? It probably should be something more than to teach athletics; sportsmanship, ethics, how to live a meaningful life. If that is the goal of the program, then you need to question lop sided scores but also recognize that they do happen. In other words, your mission statement in school athletics needs to be ore than win.
This team probably hadn’t thought their purpose out. Most teams don’t.
Years ago, Southern Illinois University, who nearly always has marginal teams finally won a game. The coach noted they did the right thing and took the opposing QB out early (read permanent, career ending knee injury). If that was the right thing to do to win, why not simply knee cap him before the game?
These programs need to be better than that. That said, I do not think there should have been a suspension or any sort of legislation with regards to this story.
How cruel! Make it obvious to the losing team that you’re not playing your best to make ‘em feel better.
RIght, rey.
What would be wrong with talking to the opposing coach at a timeout? “Look, I hate the idea of running up the score. I’ve pulled the press, sat back in a zone, put in the scrubs, insisted on 5 passes before a shot, but even the scrubs are scoring. What do you recommend. I don’t want to shave points, but this is embarrassing for all of us. If you forfeit, we could mingle our teams and play for practice, maybe both teams have some fun, because neither of us is having fun right now.”
Be interesting to see if the winning team was trash talking, too. Then I think we’d see what they were learning in an atmosphere of savage perversity.
