Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a likely 2016 presidential contender, took a shot Wednesday at a possible rival, saying it was "the definition of insanity" for Mitt Romney to launch a third White House bid.
"Its sort of what Einstein said, that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result, Paul told the New Hampshire Journal.
A couple of months ago he said that hed had his chance and it was time for somebody new. He was probably right when he said that," Paul added. "I think we do need somebody and something new."
Paul made the comments while on a trip to the early voting state of New Hampshire to talk with local leaders.
Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and the 2012 GOP nominee, is telling Republicans he is serious about another White House bid. According to reports, he is working the phones with potential donors, past aides and lawmakers.
GOP lawmakers, though, have shown little enthusiasm for a third Romney run.
Earlier this week, Paul said that while he liked Romney personally, "that's yesterday's news, he's tried twice."
Paul, who announced his pick of a campaign manager on Tuesday, has said he will officially decide on a presidential bid by March or April.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) has also said he is weighing a run.
Paul told the Journal on Wednesday that Romney and Bush occupy the same space and are competing somewhat for the same voters people who want something that is safe, something that is sort of historical."
"But even people who are looking for safe realize that safe hasnt won in the past," Paul said.

Shut up Paul, no one cares what you think!
I think both Romney and Bush running is a GREAT thing!
(it splits the RINO vote, and leaves the door wide open for Cruz to grab the nomination)
Oh and you can take Huck with you Paul, since both of you are nuts.
I heard Medved shilling for Romney again yesterday. Medved has turned into such a disappointment.
All the Republicans who are thinking of running hope we’ll be so sick of Obama by 2016 that we will gladly elect anyone with a R beside their name.
Yeah, that goes for you, too, Ron.
You’ve been doing the same thing over and over for, what, it seems like about the last 16 elections.

How many times did his daddy run? And how many times will Rand himself run?
Now THAT is “the definition of insanity”.
Ron, Rand, what’s the difference?
Ron Paul is like Lyndon LaRouche except a bit more successful
Says the man running on Ron Paul’s name.
but...but...only a McCain/Romney/Dole type campaign can pick up independents and ensure victory. Right?
Well Ron Paul partnered with Mitt Romney in the 2012 race to knock the other candidates down.
Don’t know what was in it for Paul (other than attention). Maybe he thought his son could benefit in a Romney administration.
Bring back Pat Paulson.
PS I’m hoping that Jimmy Carter and Al Sharpton each run again and give Hillary and Warren some laughable competition.
Takes one to know one
Anyway, this stopped clock, rand Paul, is right
He is referring to the definition of insanity: someone who does the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.
Bush, Romney and Christie are all drawing from the same pile of money. Bush’s noises have forced Romney’s and Christie’s hands.
Cruz, Paul and Palin have an appeal to a wide swath of smaller donors.
Walker can probably draw a bit from both.
Yeah, I wanted to call in and explain to him that Romney would be “Dole II”. He kept saying what a nice guy he is. Yeah, so was Jimmy Carter.
He kept saying it would be historically unprecedented for him to win like it was a reason for him to run. That really cracked me up. There is a reason it is historically unprecedented.
But the sad thing is that our country is so far gone that such candidates look good.
What I really wanted to say to Medved was that it is clear that the problem is not the candidates we have. Rather, it is their chances of winning based on their beliefs.
i.e. the problem is the electorate.
Shut up Paul2...you’re right..let him run and wipe out the RINO vote!
Let Mitt and Jebbie duke it out for RINO of the year. The two of them will probably kill Crispy’s run so that gets rid of him.
Hilarious coming dfrom a guy whose crazy old man just would not stop.
