Rather than fall quiet as requested during a national minute of silence last week, three boys in Hamid Abdelaalis high school class in this heavily Muslim suburb of Paris staged an informal protest, speaking loudly through all 60 seconds.
In one school in Normandy, some Muslim students yelled God is great! in Arabic during that same moment. In a Paris middle school, another group of young Muslims politely asked not to respect the minute, arguing to their teacher, You reap what you sow.
Abdelaali, a 17-year-old high school senior who did observe the quiet minute, said he did so only because he was outraged by the killings in the name of his religion that were carried out But he also said he feels disgusted by a newspaper whose provocative cartoons had used the image of the prophet Muhammad for satire and which continued to do so in its tragicomic first edition hitting newsstands Wednesday morning. I know some kids who agreed with the attack, he said. I did not, but I also cannot say that I support what Charlie Hebdo is doing.
Within Frances Muslim community of some 5 million the largest in Europe many are viewing the tragedy in starkly different terms from their non-Muslim compatriots. They feel deeply torn by the now-viral slogan I am Charlie, arguing that no, they are not Charlie at all.
Many of Frances Muslims like Abdelaali abhor the violence that struck the country last week. But they are also revolted by the notion that they should defend the paper. By putting the publication on a pedestal, they insist, the French are once again sidelining the Muslim community, feeding into a general sense of discrimination that, they argue, helped create the conditions for radicalization in the first place.

The feelings of some people matter.
When Christians are insulted or murdered? Not news for NY TIMES.
Leave it to NYT to emote over this “multicultural” plight.
Kids talking during a moment of silence? Other kids should have "dealt with" that.
It's time for street justice.
Prezactly.
Imagine if this were Turkey and there were a few Christian students complaining that they felt uncomfortable if Christian anarchists had attacked a Turkish paper that insulted Jesus. Think it would be pretty? Wonder if those Muslim students have any idea the tolerance and freedom the West affords them.
Not as torn as the victims.
Boo frickin’ hoo for those Muslims who sit by and do nothing against these misbegotten terrorists.
I agree with Churchill. Not previously familiar with the quote, I formed a similar opinion.
Damn, now we have to go back there again to throw out another group of invaders.
The leftist media keeps getting this wrong, intentionally I believe.
When muslims shout “Allah hu akbar” they are saying Allah is GREATER. Greater than whom? Why, the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob, Yahweh, Jehovah.
One more time for clarity, “Allah” does NOT mean “God.” If muslims worship the same God as jews and christians, and have since the time of Isaac and Esau, why did they change his name?
Allah is the desert moon god (you never noticed the crescent moon symbol)? Roughly the same God as Ba’al, the one requiring the burning alive of human sacrifice, the same one who slaughter babies and pregnant women, the same one who required its followers to cut their scalps and bleed (see 2 Kings 18). Very old, very primitive, requires the blood of the enemy, great violence and suffering.
Totally different conceptual framework from the God worshipped by jews and christians.
Not opinion, historical fact.
Remember this. When the ‘slims are shouting allah hu akbar, they are challenging the other God.
They should do it a bit more quietly, he may awaken, sooner than they think.
Je suis Charles Martel.
Me too....Churchill had some amazing quotes when the time came for war....and he wasn’t about sitting still unitl the job was done, nor unable to identify the enemy.
I have no respect for the FRENCH students who didn’t beat the CRAP out of their fellow students who did this.
>>> discrimination that, they argue, helped create the conditions for radicalization in the first place <<<
The conditions for radicalization were created in the 9th century. By a pedophile hater.
If your “Religion” cannot handle living peacefully in a free society, the obvious solution is to go home, or go to a Sharia saddled county, until then ‘Feme la Bouche!
The Ummah has invaded France.
I do not feel the least bit sorry for them.
There will be a huge battle.
The Ummah either becomes French or it must be destroyed. This is Frances only alternative outside of continuous warfare.
“some Muslim students yelled God is great! in Arabic;
another group, arguing to their teacher, You reap what you sow.”
Back when they were 1% or 2% of the population, they simply would not have done that. Now they are starting to reach the point where they feel emboldened to do so...one doesn’t have to use much imagination what they’ll be ready to do next.
Most muslims lack any critical thinking capacity even within Islam itself...they are trained to obey...period.
