Ohio State won its eighth national championship in division 1-A/Football Bowl Subdivision history with their win over Oregon in the inaugural college football playoff championship.

That win moves Ohio State into a tie with Notre Dame for the most championships during the poll era (1936-present), the most commonly used cut-off for counting titles. Ohio State is also now just two behind Alabama.

I watched Oregon handily beat FSU and watched Ohio State struggle but win against Alabama in the play-offs.

I expected a lop-sided Oregon victory over Ohio.

Not so...Ohio State is real and 'took it to' Oregon.

I actually would have guessed Oklahoma, a team I do not care for. I like Oklahoma State tho.

Alabama was a power back in the old days when Southern teams were pretty much overlooked by the national media.

There’s no doubt Meyer is a great coach. One of the greatest. But it’s not like he started out with a high school team and took them the championship in two years. Tressel left him a very talented bunch of players. The only limitations on him were the number of scholarships. And that’s no different than another team whose coach can’t recruit or evaluate.

Meyer has a way to go to get to the real total number of national titles Alabama has. By the way Princeton leads all teams. Alabama once again has the top recruiting class coming in this year.

Nobody listened to me yesterday when I predicted that OSU was going to surprise a lot of people.

To me it wasn't really a surprise -- and it shouldn't have been considered an upset, either. It was obvious to me that OSU was flat-out better than Oregon, and I used their most recent games leading up to the championship games to gauge them.

Sure, Oregon beat Florida State handily. But FSU was by far the most overrated team in the postseason this season. Of the four playoff teams, FSU was the one who really didn't belong (though there was no way they'd miss the playoffs, with an undefeated record). They won some very close games against teams that weren't all that exceptional, and they probably would have lost a playoff game against any of the top 10-12 NCAA teams this year. Oregon really didn't prove anything to me by beating them.

Ohio State, on the other hand, simply looked more and more dominant as the weeks went by. They went into the Big Ten championship game against Wisconsin as the underdog ... and they won that game by a score of 59-0. I don't think I've ever seen anything like that happen before.

They will need it... They had been way overrated the last couple years.

I don’t think their overrated. As bad as they played against Ohio State they were a last second dropped pass from tying the game at the end. If Alabama had that 3rd string quarterback Ohio State has instead of the very average Blake Sims they might have went undefeated. And I think they would havedid the same thing to Oregon as Ohio State did. Oregon has no defense and if you rush their players and get them off that precision passing they are very beatable. I don’t like that Chip Kelly system. You either win big or lose big. Will agree Ohio State is going be a handful next year.

I think there should be a cutoff date for recognizing college football teams. Maybe 1920 or 1930 or even 1940. It just was not the same game before then.

I remember Bear Bryant said his 1966 Alabama team was his best ever. He called John David Crow (Texas A&M) as his best player and Joe Namath as the best athlete he ever coached.

I always considered cutoffs when the modern facemask was used. If we don’t have that then the most dominate football conference is still the Ivy League that has the most national championships.

I’m a Bama fan and have been for over 40 years but I was certainly impressed with the hard nosed old fashioned football that Ohio State used to beat Bama. Ohio State became my second most favorite football team last night with the total dismantling of Oregon. I really thought the Ducks would have demolished them. Roll Tide and Go Buckeyes

I remember when Bart Starr wore a helmet with just a single bar for a face mask. Almost like not having one.

USC won eight-not seven-national championships between 1936 and 2014: 1939, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1974, 1978, 2003, 2004.

Baylor has proven you don’t have to get a bunch of 5 star recruits to be a winner. Myer can also get the most out of the guys he signs.

The Bernie Bierman years. In the mid-’30s, the team with future legend Bud Wilkinson was the bees’ knees!

Yea, and I just googled Notre Dame National Championships and got 13.

The NCAA does not list 1938 and 1953 but does recognize 1919 and 1964, making Notre Dame a national champion selection in thirteen seasons: 1919, 1924, 1929, 1930, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1964, 1966, 1973, 1977, 1988.
