I think there should be a cutoff date for recognizing college football teams. Maybe 1920 or 1930 or even 1940. It just was not the same game before then.
I remember Bear Bryant said his 1966 Alabama team was his best ever. He called John David Crow (Texas A&M) as his best player and Joe Namath as the best athlete he ever coached.
I always considered cutoffs when the modern facemask was used. If we don’t have that then the most dominate football conference is still the Ivy League that has the most national championships.
