A Saudi Arabian blogger has been publicly flogged after being convicted of cybercrime and insulting Islam, reports say.
Raif Badawi, who was sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in jail, was flogged 50 times. The flogging will be carried out weekly, campaigners say.
Mr Badawi, the co-founder of a now banned website called the Liberal Saudi Network, was arrested in 2012.
Rights groups condemned his conviction and the US appealed for clemency.
On Thursday state department spokeswoman Jen Psaki urged the Saudi authorities to "cancel this brutal punishment" and to review his case.
In addition to his sentence, Mr Badawi was ordered to pay a fine of 1 million riyals ($266,000; £175,000).
In 2013 he was cleared of apostasy, which could have carried a death sentence.

It must be so scary to live a life were your mind explodes when someone questions your religion. To be so insecure about your religion that you are willing to kill if anyone criticizes rather than debate your convictions.

A beheading would have been kinder. Whipping someone 50 times, once a week, for 20 weeks, is almost surely a death sentence in everything but name. No one heals fast enough to recover from that kind of beating in a week. This guy is going to be broken down, bit by bit until he dies from the punishment itself or an infection from his wounds (one only imagines the lack of medical treatment he’s going to get).

Seems like the only growth industry in these Taliban Townes would be some sort of store or kiosk that sells Sound Proof Booths, whips, brass knuckles, clubs, and tailored wardrobes appropriate for each of these Government Sanctioned vocations. For the wealthy who have been recently whipped, there may be a door to door First Aid service; Cheap and Discreet!

You’re thinking like a westerner. Islam is a religious/political/life dominating cult. There’s no experience or reason or rationality. How do you negotiate with people who WANT to die? You can’t. You can only oblige them.

Michelle Malkin sums it up perfectly by calling it the “Religion of Perpetual Outrage”. They keep their followers ramped up and angry and on the edge of insane violence. The death cult requires that followers kill and be killed to keep the insanity going full-bore. There is nothing rational or logical about this planetary human Ebola cult. Extreme violence is what they live for and feed on. There is no middle ground, no negotiation, no compromise. The West sitting around arguing and discussing the problem like it’s a logistical or administrative issue while thousands die is a total failure to face reality. The muzzies have the upper hand because they’ve seen how we react - we do nothing.
The religious part of (i)slam if taken just by itself could be tolerated, as worshipping and praying to a higher power never hurt anyone. But when combined with all the other rules and laws conceived and cobbled together by humans it becomes nothing but an insidious operating system disguised and protected by a thin veneer of religion, as a cover up.
It always has and will remain incompatible with western culture. Since its foundation is questionable at best blasphemy, criticism and free speech cannot be tolerated, as any open and honest dialog about its origin, purpose and aim would quickly cause it to fall apart.
