Terrorist attacks like Charlie Hebdo come and go. Mostly they go.
For all the grief, pain and outrage of the past 24 hoursfrom as always President Barack Obama down to the streets of Parisdoes any serious person doubt that by this time next week life in the West will be back to normal? Life, which is to say daily existence defined by staring at apps on smartphone screens, will resume.
Is this too cynical for the Charlie-Hebdo moment? We live in times defined by the comedienne Lily Tomlin : No matter how cynical you become, its never enough to keep up.
The title of this column could have been, We Are All Peshawar Now. Peshawar, Pakistan, is about 4,800 miles from Paris, and about 6,800 miles to New York City. On Dec. 16, seven heavily armed men from the Pakistan Taliban entered the Army Public School in Peshawar, a city with a half-million more people than Chicago. Once inside, the gunmen killed 132 school children by shooting them in the head or chest.
Terrorist acts come and go.
As a kind of footnote to the Charlie Hebdo massacre Wednesday, an al Qaeda suicide-bomber at about the same hour in Sana, Yemen, blew up 37 people. It will pass virtually without notice.

...it is feckless to call these events incidents. They are acts in a war. The people committing them think so and they say so. Why dont we?

What weapon would Jesus choose?
???
Huh? This is an excellent article.
Daniel nails it.
This author lost my interest and support at the ‘come and go, mostly go’ comment. I read the portion posted ‘on screen’ but this author is wasting time. Everything stated is known. Why didn’t the author go after the enablers in our own corrupt people that occupy D.C.? I know, everyone is a critic ... myself included.
This author (no-to-illegals) lost my interest .....this author is wasting (my) time
amen ... (my) thoughts.
“What weapon would Jesus choose?”
this is what every man needs to be thinking about 24/7. And I’m sorry, but loving your “neighbor” is not going to solve things right now.
Churches need to be talking about this 24/7 and putting to the side ALL other issues.
There is a real war going on in this Country. We have been seeing it evolve everyday. And its not just terrorism from muslims. We se the hatred, racism and violence from blacks. We see the same from the La Razas and their sympathizers. The militant LGBT.
We see it from our own elected officials in how they legislate. We see it from most all Govt Agencies. The media. Even so called churches are involved in the takeover of our Country. Apathy from our neighbors is inexcusable during these times.
This is THE topic for the church. Sorry poor and needy, backseat for now. If Christian men don’t start to fight back hard, nobody will be around for the needy.
What Henninger is saying is precisely that we need to get action and a strategy from our governments in order to stop this, and sentimental demonstrations and hashtags do absolutely nothing. Our governments are obviously fine with the idea of losing some of us every year to Islamic attacks in our own countries. Not just Western governments, but even India and similar places, which have taken no meaningful reprisals against the terrorists who have committed massive atrocities in their countries.
regrettably am seeing none of the people in D.C. named ... is interesting we know their names but the author doesn’t?
Don't disagree, but our Pope, for example, is more worried about global warming, social justice, and Cuba than he is the healthy and well-being of His church.
Christians are in SERIOUS trouble. We've been holding the spiritual line around the world for the better part of 2 millenia, but we've lost a lot of ground in the last 30 years. I fear it's going to come to a point where Christian morality is all but eradicated from large parts of the world, and the power vacuum will be filled with Jihadis and atheists.
I think Christians are in serious trouble because they have been too nice. And civil.
And evil unchecked destroys nice and civil.
Society has cowed to evil for too long. Like a 3 year old having a tantrum on the grocery store floor, we are trying to understand the behavior instead of slapping the shit out of it.
Yep, knocking down the tables is no longer sufficient.
LOL. Our (at the time) 2+ yo threw such an exhibition while we were on a ski trip in SLC. The likely Mormon peeps in the store were approving of our ignoring of same behavior while it continued. A very informative incident....
The kid in question has turned out fine. ;-)
Partly. He’s also talking about citizens, especially those of western nations, as a whole
My assessment of the current situation is the gov’ts of Western Civilization have left no recourse, the citizens will need to take matters into their own hands, and the gov’ts will gun down a million citizens to protect islam, count on it.
