President Barack Obama on Friday will propose making two years of community college free for students.
In a White House video posted Thursday evening, Obama said he wanted to offer a little preview of his plans for the Jan. 20 State of the Union address.
What Id like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everybody whos willing to work for it, Obama said. Its something we can accomplish, and its something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anybody in the world.
The proposal would make two years of community college free for students with a C+ average who attend school at least half-time and who are making steady progress toward their degree.
Obama will visit Pellissippi Community College in Tennessee on Friday. Beginning this year, any state high school graduate is eligible for two years of free community college tuition under the Tennessee Promise.
Federal funding would cover three-quarters of the average cost of community college, and Obama is asking states to pick up the rest of the tab assuming Congress agrees to the plan in the first place.
I hope weve got the chance to make sure that Congress gets behind these kinds of efforts to make sure that even as we rebound and grow in 2015, that it benefits everybody and not just some, the president said in the video.
To be eligible, community colleges would have to offer academic programs that fully transfer credits to local public four-year colleges and universities or training programs with high graduation rates that lead to in-demand degrees and certificates. Community colleges must also adopt promising and evidence-based institutional reforms to improve student outcomes.
If all 50 states participate, the proposal could benefit 9 million students each year and save students an average of $3,800 in tuition, the White House said.

Well, the teachers’ unions and young people will love him. This is just a way to buy votes. Actually, he knows that Congress won’t pass this, so it’s just a way to show people that he cares and that the GOP doesn’t care about kids. Pure political posturing.
Where does he think money comes from? Has no one explained all that to him?
he sounds so great putting up his plan to spend other people’s money.
want it free? how bout require all public universities to teach for free. no taxpayers’ money involved at all? he does it to evil hospitals.
let it truly be free barry.
he knows where the money is coming from. it’s why he’s proposing it.
He doesn’t care one whit about the plan, it is only so Republicans can be portrayed as mean and racist. That is the true purpose.
I wanna go to Harvard.
Harvard is taking enough government money already.
They should let me in.
And now the value (usefulness) of those 2 years will be less
Will they get points toward grades by scoring in the knock out game?
He passed ObamCare by promising economically illiterate and gullible Americans “FREE HEALTHCARE” paid for by ‘The Rich” which we are now learning is health care that is not just far from free, far more expensive with far worse care and the “Rich” people that foot the bill are American middle class.
No he wants to do to college eduction what he did to health care.
Whatever we do let’s don’t propose to pay for any kind of technical school that people might actually use to be able to get a job with. A few million more people taking french horn, water polo, and Italian, will really turn the economy around.
Paid for by those same kids-turned adults with money earned from the service jobs they got with their AA degrees.
What’s the difference, by the time 0dildo gets done destroying the middle class, there won’t be any jobs for his precious ‘graduates’ to fill, unless he ratchets up affirmative action or another EO to give his thugs no-work jobs. #sickofhisshit
More free stuff, more free stuff; elections coming up, more free stuff. Plenty more where that came from
Putting aside for a moment all of the questions and legitimate arguments about the feasibility of doing this, let's suppose this does become a reality. I wonder how Obama's buddies in the academic world at the four year colleges and universities will feel about this? Why enroll in a four year school and pay the exorbitant tuition for your first two years of college when you can attend a Community College for free? The four year schools are going to lose a lot of revenue.
And the unemployment rate goes down.
Free k-12 is bad enough, no more free school!!!!
