A young mother and cartoonist who survived the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris today said she had let the suspected Al Qaeda killers into the magazine office.
Corrine Rey said she had returned from picking up her young daughter from a kindergarten when she was confronted by two heavily armed men wearing balaclavas.
'I had gone to pick up my daughter at day care, arriving in front of the magazine building, where two masked and armed men brutally threatened us,' said Ms Rey, who draws under the name 'Coco'.
'They said they wanted to go up to the offices, so I tapped in the code,' said Ms Rey, referring to the digi-code security system on the inter-phone.
Miss Rey and her daughter hid under a desk, from where they saw two other cartoonists being executed.
'They shot Wolinski and Cabu,' she said, 'It lasted five minutes. I had taken refuge under a desk.
She said the men 'spoke French perfectly' and 'claimed they were 'Al Qaeda terrorists'.

It’s her fault she was given the code? Anyone blaming her for the 12 deaths is not drilling down to true root causes.
As horrifying as it is to you, I didn’t research you carefully, because you just aren’t that important. And I just assumed you were a child from your posts. All the loud talk, the bravado common to certain types. And don’t kid yourself, his service is equaled and utterly eclipsed by numerous posters here. And the ones who have experienced the most of that world, typically don’t sound like you and him.
Yes, I agree, the people who know the code should have some kind of second level of verification that will not be visible outside.
Also, the police need to be armed. What exactly were they supposed to do? And how were the employees supposed to be protected by their presence in the face of armed invaders?
while you’re so deeply invested in this hypothetical, let’s throw in a few ponies and goldfish too. So now we’re talking about 100 coworkers, 100 toddlers, 75 ponies and 200 goldfish. My additions only make the hypothetical slightly more ridiculous.

You are right in principle. And it’s a fact that people don’t think through what ought to be concluded re: massive security around an office like that. Who isn’t lulled into false security by the p.c. of today? What I want to know is what would you accept as an answer from us behind our screen safety? Mothers will react to protect their children and though her reaction is understandable, we can call her a coward, too. So you’re right in principle that to die in defense of liberty is how our Founders and many others decided to behave. In this one example, though, you have made your point, what use is it to divide our forum members which plays into their divide and conquer strategy?

You have identified the true root cause so stop blaming the mother.
No he’s not right. The mother is not the true root cause of 12 people dying. Travis has identified the true root cause - it’s not the mother.
That's exactly what I was thinking! Seems since they had been threatened before there should be a special code that alerted people inside. Not that they would have thought about that beforehand, hindsight is 20/20.

And that raises some other serious questions about security.....apart from the one discussed on this thread.

If she had responded by saying "Shoot my daughter, I'm not giving you the code", how many lives would have been spared? Would the terrorists have been satisfied with her death and just left the building because they couldn't get in?
I contend that the body count would have increased by at least two if she had not opened the door. The terrorists were not going to be deterred by a security lock. They would have just kept killing people until they got in. Once they were in, the victims who ended up getting killed were all sitting ducks, trapped without firearms in a gun free zone.
It takes a very small man to call a protective mother a coward. If it was your daughter would you have just let them shoot her? Do you think you would have prevented any deaths by sacrificing your own child on the Kingsport chance that maybe you might slow down an inevitable massacre?
