People across the nation are mourning the death of Mario Cuomo, the passionate Italian-American Catholic who served as the governor of New York from 1983-1994.
Cuomos political career was deeply formed by his Catholic faith. During his famous 1984 speech at the University of Notre Dame, he said as much: The Catholic Church is my spiritual home. My heart is there, and my hope.
But Cuomos relationship with the Church in the United States, particularly its bishops, was at times strained, especially over the issue of legalized abortion. At Notre Dame and elsewhere, Cuomo maintained that -SNIP-

Absurd. He was an apostate.
Why do so many Catholics support the Democrats?
If Catholics voted like Evangelicals the Dems wouldn’t win another election.
yeah, me too. I’m catholic also, although I don’t believe or practice any of its teachings.
Because of the acceptance of his stance, Catholic politicians after him were able to compromise on abortion.
THAT is perhaps his worst legacy.
It’s not too late for the RCC to excommunicate Cuomo.
Where he is right now, I’d say that was taken care of.
Some time ago I put forth the idea that most American Catholics prefer their government to more closely resemble their church: Power concentrated at the top, hierarchical, bureaucratic, and they don't mind their politicians to be rich and living in luxury the same as many of their religious leaders.
Protestant Americans, OTOH, prefer their government to resemble their churches: Power is concentrated at the local level, the laity have control over who leads them, and there's very little in the way of bureaucracy.
It's not a criticism, mind you, just an observation that people prefer to surround themselves with what's familiar to them.
I’m sure he’s explaining himself to all those who were aborted (murdered) on his authority.
Pretty sure you aren’t a Catholic anymore. It’s NOT like being Jewish.
You’re typical from what I’ve seen
My best hombre was an altar boy
Loves Jesus in his heart
But never goes to mass and a little soft on culture
Your observation is based on the liberal definition of Catholicism that Mario Cuomo helped popularize. Catholicism is not an ethnicity but a continual choice that Canon Law states must be reaffirmed weekly (minimum).
In the last election, Obama won the vote of self-identified Catholics by 51-48%. I do not have the stats to back this up, but given the fact that practicing Catholics (those who do practice the minimum requirement of the religion by attending Mass) tend to be MUCH older than society in general, and given the fact that Obama lost every age group over 40, I would expect that practicing Catholics actually vote conservative. That has also been my experience, even before you get to the issue of abortion.
He did Satan’s work, and his son is living proof of his success.
If Catholics voted like Evangelicals the Dems wouldnt win another election.

If there were an I.Q. test, where the minimum qualifying score was 80, the dems would never win another election.
Its not too late for the RCC to excommunicate Cuomo.

Or dig him up and burn him at the stake. It would not be unprecedented.
Most Catholics have come from economically poor backgrounds.
In the past they voted democrat because they felt that party represented the working man.
However the democrat party has been taken over by the socialists/communists.
A lot of democrat voters don't realize this and continue to vote for the democrat.
The democrat Ronald Reagan hit the nail on the head when he said -I didn't leave my party, they left me.
The cowardly Republican politicians won't call them socialists, and continue the deception by calling them democrats.
The same is true of most of the right wing talk show hosts. -Tom
Yes, he was Catholic. He was a BAD Catholic.
ok, sorry. I thought people would get my point by being facetious. cuomo was typical of liberals who claim to be catholic while not following its teachings.
to me its as stupid as saying, I’m republican, but I agree with democrats.
White Catholics voted 59% for Romney, which was greater than non-evangelical Protestants.

This is a misconception. Gallup did an extensive study on American Catholics (or those who identify as Catholic, anyway) and found that Catholics the nation's average in virtually every economic and education Category. About the only way that Catholics as a group differ from society in general is that they are more Hispanic (29% versus 13%) and less black (3% versus 11%) than the nation at large.
