Forget the French fries. How about a side of yuca with that Big Mac?
Venezuela's more than 100 McDonald's franchises have run out of potatoes and are now serving alternatives like deep-fried arepa flatbreads or yuca, a starchy staple of traditional Venezuelan cooking.
McDonald's franchisers are blaming a contract dispute with West Coast dock workers for halting the export of frozen fries to the country. The dispute also caused several days of French fry rationing in Japan last month. But Sonia Ruseler, who runs McDonald's restaurants in Latin America, declined to say Tuesday why other countries in the region are not affected.
While McDonald's may be the ultimate symbol of U.S. capitalism, the socialist government seems acutely aware that Venezuelans relish their Happy Meals. On Monday, a state-sponsored news website posted a story assuring the situation "has nothing at all to do" with government policy.
At the Caracas McDonald's, a man wearing an "employee of the month" cap braved the dinner rush Monday, patiently explaining to patron after patron that instead of French fries, the store was offering yucca fries, mini-arepas, or salads.

nothing wrong with fried yuca.
I didn't see yucca on Mooshell's school lunch plan. French Fries, however...

First it’s toilet paper and now McDonald’s has run out of French fries? Oh, the horror!...The horror!!

If the problem is due to a labor dispute with west coast longshoremen, why not just ship the potatoes out of New Orleans. It might even be shorter.

Works the opposite for me. Not unusual, fiber is another thing that can have opposite effects on different people. It was a clever comment, though.

The french fry manufacturers her in my state have been using primarily east coast terminals for export during the strike, the same ones they use to ship to Europe.

I’m sure the local McDonalds there could purchase some potatoes locally, some hand-operated french fryer cutters and proceed to make up fresh daily batches.
Heck, they could probably hire a Mexican to come in every morning and slice them up for cheap!

Reports are that the crowd sliced and diced somebody outside the McDonalds. This is a photo of the victim not long before the incident:

I’m guessing when they get the new Panama Canal done a lot of the pacific rim shipping will go to the eastern side.

True dat. The only Government policy affecting the availability of French Fries is Michelle Obama's.

Im sure the local McDonalds there could purchase some potatoes locally, some hand-operated french fryer cutters and proceed to make up fresh daily batches. Contracts with the FF manufacturers and corporate would not permit that. Overall, Mcd goes through 9 millions pounds a day of french fries.
