Update: Boehner elected Speaker, loses 25 votes

If you took the over on 19 votes, you won! There were 25 defectors on the Speaker, a number tantalizingly close to the 29 they needed. But then, that makes sense:

It wasn’t one vote short. People are basing that on the count that was discussed in the run up to this. However, that does not account for the fact that the number of people present in the chamber today was less than expected.

The tally at the start of the session was 401 representatives, so that means Boehner needed 201 to get a majority. I believe in the final tally he actually got 205. Also note that there were several reps that were present for that 401 count, but who did not actually vote for speaker. Boehner was one of these, so if you factor that in, he actually had 206 votes or more.

I agree crony capitalism motivates much of the Washington BS.

But legalizing and putting illegal Mexican and other immigrants on tax rolls isn’t gonna help other than provide their bribed votes to squelch small government/conservative influences in the country, because such immigrants are net drags on government coffers for generations.

It looks clearly like a staged show with many Demos absent, at least Gowdy on the GOP side as I see it also absent. The numbers arranged to give Boehner majority of those ‘present and voting.’
