Running Total of Republicans that will Not Vote for Boehner for Speaker
January 5, 2015 | Self

Posted on 01/05/2015 6:03:27 AM PST by Seattle Conservative

LibFreeUSA suggested this on the thread linked below, but didn't see one in my search.

Starting a thread to keep a running total of those Republicans that have publically stated that they will not vote for Boehner for Speaker.

I hear many more members are working on statements to oppose Boehner as we speak...[and Stutzman]

Am trying. Sounds like they are overwhelmed. Rings and then is cut off

Anna Eshoo represents me in CA 18. She and Boner are birds of a feather. No point calling.

Thanks for this post and for calling. I heard Yoho on Fox and Friends earlier and someone (IIRC it was Steve) asked if he was going to step aside and support Rep Gohmert and he said no.

I’m still learning and understanding how the vote for Speaker works but it sounds like that if all the Dims vote for Pelosi or another Dim and no one votes present or abstain (which would reduce the number of the majority needed), Boehner would need a 218 vote majority to become Speaker.

So, if I understand it correctly and as an example, if Yoho gets 10 Pub votes and Gohmert gets 25 Pub votes, Boehner wouldn’t make the 218 majority threshold and it would go to a 2nd ballot. At the 2nd ballot, I would hope that Yoho would throw his support behind Gohmert and ask his supporters and others to do the same. By using my example, Gohmert wouldn’t meet the majority threshold, but neither would Boehner. The balloting would continue until someone reached the majority threshold. I was reading on Wikipedia about this yesterday, and it looks like the most number of ballots for Speaker was 9.

I got through to both Reichert’s and Gohmert’s office in DC right way to a live person by calling their individual lines (I posted a link to find your Rep upthread).

If folks can’t get into the DC office, call their local offices or both and/or send email! :-)

You explained it better than anyone else I've heard. You cleared it up for me. I hope you are right. It makes sense.

Can our legal eagles explain the process?

Please?

If more than one runs against Boehner, does that split the vote and could it give Pelosi the chair?

I still don’t understand the process.

From what I've seen on the email, you can't get through that way unless the person is your actual representative. The contact software looks at your zipcode and only lets you send email if you are in the district.

So phone calls maybe the best.

Another thing about US house email is that when you get on a Representative's email list, the address is in the format:
louie.gohmert@mail.house.gov

So I wonder if you can bypass the zipcode check by using the above format for the various representatives.

“188 Democrats will vote for Boehner if necessary.

Save your energy.”

Boehner may have a “deal” with Pelosi to get some Dim votes, but I don’t think it will be 188. If all the Dims crossed to “the other side of the aisle”, that wouldn’t look too good for them or Pelosi or Hoyer; and, while some may want to spin it that “Boehner is truly the first bi-partisan Speaker in history” (traditionally, each party has voted for someone on their side), don’t you think that would make Boehner look worse than he does now if the only way he can win is if the Dims vote for him?

I don’t mind expending a bit of energy now so that Rep Gohmert is elected Speaker - - -will save a lot of grief and stress down the road for many of us.

could it give Pelosi the chair?

Impossible.

Now, perhaps some scenario provides P with more votes than B on *the first ballot*, but it cannot be enough to win. (any P "win" would be very short lasting). The second and ensuing ballots would resolve to an 'R' speaker.

Just tried it and it didn't work. Got failure delivery. So I guess we can only send most of them email if we are in their district.

Anyone know for sure.

Honestly, if one doesn’t have your critters’ numbers on speed dial, I have to question how serious they are about even trying to make the feeble effort we can.

(General comment)

From what I’ve read (like I said upthread, still learning and trying to understand the process), it would be almost impossible for Pelosi to become Speaker.

Can’t find the thread I saw some info in about it right now. There are 188 Dims in the House. A Speaker needs to receive a majority of the votes (which excludes the number voting present or abstaining). So, if no Pubbies vote for Pelosi (very unlikely), and no Pubbies or Dims vote present or absent (doubtful any would do that)thereby decreasing the 218 majority needed, there’s no way Pelosi could win unless the total of those voting present or abstaining or decreased it by rather large numbers and Pubbies crossing the aisle to vote for her increased her # of votes to hit the majority mark.

This is a bit confusing to me (and I don’t think I’m alone). I think I’m correct on the foregoing, but don’t say it’s the absolute truth, it’s just how I think it is as I understand it right now.

What did Reichert’s aid say? I emailed them yesterday morning, but haven’t called them yet.

I was wrong about the format. Can't send email that way either. At one time they accepted all emails, but not anymore.

As far as I know a phone call is the only way unless it is your district.

I cannot imagine that Tom McClintock (CA) — a staunch conservative — will vote for Boehner, but I sent a note anyway and I asked him to work to persuade others in the caucus to do likewise.

It looks like you can send email to some of the leaders of the House even if you aren't in their district.

Boehner’s contact asks for your zipcode, but it tells you how to send him a message even if you are out of his district.

This page should allow you to send Boehner a message to resign as Speaker:

That was easy. Sending Boehner a message to resign felt real good!

Now's the time boys, hang together and oust the Crying King or slink around as beta males for the next two years at least. Defend your manhood and vote him out, that's all you have to do.

It's the right thing to do, you'll feel better about yourselves and you'll inspire the base to back the GOP, that it's not a lost cause. Morally right - check, spiritually right - check and politically right - check. It's now or never.
