US Special Forces reportedly carried out a failed rescue mission in Raqqa to save the captured Jordanian pilot held prisoner by Islamic State (ISIS) militants.
The operation is believed to have taken place on 1 January. US Special Forces were attempting to rescue Muadh al-Kasasbeh, the Jordanian pilot who ended up in the hands of ISIS after his F-16 crashed in Raqqa on 24 December. The operation failed after US forces came under heavy fire from the ISIS.
The rescue mission was confirmed by local activists, who claimed that on the day of the operation, the coalition carried out over 13 airstrikes in Raqqa to help the Special ops team.
Abu Ibrahim al-Raquaoui, the administrator for the underground anti-ISIS online campaign Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, confirmed that five coalition aircraft hovered at low altitude over the city, while the coalition airstrikes around the city destroyed several ISIS buildings.
During this time, two helicopter gunships attempted to deploy special forces on ground to rescue the hostages, but had to beat a hasty retreat after they came under heavy fire from ISIS militants in the Rumelia area, northeast Raqqa, al Raquaoui reported on his Twitter handle

This has been floating around in the ether for about 24 hours now, but this is the first "Big Media" article I have seen. NBC posted a story 4 hours ago about "Heavy Airstrikes" in Iraq yesterday.
Hopefully we didn’t lose any of our people.
That makes 2 to nothing (that we know about) under Jimmy Carter II.
Did someone at the Outhouse tip them off ahead of time about the rescue attempt? Not that we could ever have reason to be suspicious..........
There are so many muslims in the Obama Administration I can’t understand how any action such as this “rescue mission” succeeding. The enemy is within, and has access to everything.
I trust the media less than I do the government.
Sure have been a lot of SpecOp failures lately.
Obama is worse than Jimmy Carter.
Hopefully they're too busy planning an op in Washington, DC.
SpecOps is too light of infantry for this type of target. What was needed was a Marine Expeditionary Unit, or an Airborne Bn (Rein). I would go with the MEU because they bring the hammer: Artillery, harriers, cobras, towed 120MM mortars, LAVs, snipers galore, expeditionary airfield capability, a Direct Action capability, along with 3 rifle companies and a heavy weapons company.
They would not have had to run from Shi'ite.
They track them down and kill them everyone.

As I have said before, and been criticized for, it’s time to bring the first string, the varsity, back into the game.
Let’s hope this is all we hear of it. SEALs have suffered from diarrhea of the mouth for the past few years, and it’s time for special operations to return to the shadows where they belong - and from which they are most feared and most successful.
I agree.
I can’t see 2,200 marines, well equipped, and with the kind of air cover they can bring to bear, quitting the fight.
Time to get the JV out of the White House and JCS.
They carried out an Obummer.
Doesn’t sound very covert or subtle.
Russian warships still anchored at Tartus? Their AA missiles would seem to give Putin something to say about
any such operations..
............I could be wrong but I don’t believe the Bear has fired on the Eagle ever AFTER WWII...............except by proxies and via rented fighter pilots.
That said, you make an excellent point.
