What defines gender? Is it biology, the heart and mind, or some combination of both? As the debate surrounding transgender children swirls, one girl is sharing her personal story in the hope that she can help others.
Jazz Jennings was born a boy, but started to show leanings toward a feminine side at only 15 months old. By age 2, Jazz started to verbalize her feelings that "she was a girl," and by 5 she was one of the youngest people ever to be diagnosed with gender dysphoria ― a persistent unease with the characteristics of one's gender, accompanied by a strong identification with the opposite gender.
After the diagnosis, Jazz's incredibly supportive family decided to embrace her inner feelings and allowed her to start transitioning from male to female while she was only in kindergarten. Although she was teased on occasion, Jazz maintained her outgoing personality and never let anyone stand in the way of her confidence about her gender identity.
Now, at 14, Jazz has co-authored an illustrated memoir aimed at children called "I Am Jazz." The book chronicles the early years of Jazz's life, from her diagnosis to her struggles at school, and it's not just for kids in the LGBTQ community but for anyone who feels like they don't fit in.

Don’t forget the X and Y chromosones. They determine gender.
Caused by leftist full-of-crap child-abusing "parents".
Look nitwit. If you have an X-Y chromosome combination, YOU’RE A MAN BABY! There is absolutely noting you can do about it. Having your body mutilated does nothing to change this basic fact of life. Get over it and man up pilgrim.
“Surely your son still loves good music!!!”
Only rock and roll. We were recently in NYC and offered to take him to a Broadway show. Instead he wanted to go see where CBGB’s used to be and visit the venues my wife and I frequented when we were 19. That and see a Ranger game.
Oh, dear. Kids change. It would be nice for a straight guy to love B’way (aside from my husband!)
That’s true - it was accepted in our early Protestant beginnings. But now I can only see that kid being teased by nasty boys in high school.
That's a guy dressed up like a Sheila!
I grew up in a "Little Italy" neighborhood, and all of my ancestors hailed from Italy. And I never came across the name "Chastity" among Italians.
I think Sherman is right that it's an old-fashioned American name. It's a beautiful name, but, yes, a young girl probably would be teased about it in modern times.
An old cowboy went to a bar and ordered a drink. As he sat sipping his whiskey, a young lady sat down next to him. She turned to the cowboy and asked, “Are you a real cowboy?”
He replied, “Well, I’ve spent my whole life on the ranch, herding horses, mending fences, and branding cattle, so I guess I am.”
She said, “I’m a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about women. When I shower, I think about women. As I watch TV, or even eat, I think about women. Everything seems to make me think about women.”
The two sat sipping in silence. A short time later, a man sat down on the other side of the old cowboy and asked, “Are you a real cowboy?”
He replied, “I always thought I was, but I just found out that I’m a lesbian.”
Unless there’s a real biological explanation, these children are being raised to believe that committing fraud is acceptable, as long as you believe that you’re something you’re not.
What happens when he has to check off gender on his college application? There are special scholarships for women only; any student who misrepresents himself would be in trouble. But, because this boy believes he’s female, he gets a pass?
What about if he uses the girl’s locker room or restroom? Any other boy would be in trouble, but this boy gets a pass?
Is he allowed to play on girls’ sports teams? Other boys can’t. Is he allowed to join girls-only clubs and programs? Other boys can’t.
What about when he fills out job applications? And when he’s dating, what about if he identifies himself as female to unsuspecting dates? All of this is outright fraud, unless he’s explaining everything upfront wherever he goes, whatever he’s doing.
I feel sorry for the boy, but this is nothing more than “the-world-revolves-around-me” thinking.
Chastity, Hope, Prudence, Obedience, Charity. All pretty common names in the old days.
My personal favorite, though English Puritan rather than American, was the son of Praise-God Barebones who he named If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned Barebones.
Oddly, he chose to go by the name Nicolas when he grew up. Made a name for himself as an early economist.
His brother was named Jesus-Christ-came-into-the-world- to-save Barebones.
I have to admit a little disappointment one day when she decided she was a girl, though I knew it was coming. She's now a great Mom with two of the cutest little grandsons anybody could ask for. And that tool training has come in awfully handy.
I'll bet you that Jazz's parents were more than a few cards short a deck.
Children are very good at imitation of behavior that they see around them. This is a great learning and survival trait. It keeps them running until proper hormones start kicking in - and then they change.
It is mighty stupid to draw any conclusions whatsoever from an opinion of a little kid. He or she has no clue what it is to be a boy or a girl, outside of purely external decorations like clothes or games. But if you keep treating a boy like a girl, he *will* start acting like a girl - he has not enough hormones yet to influence his behavior. Some parents could treat children like that, even without ill intent, if they wanted a child of the opposite sex.
Sorry, but in the modern world the answer to all your questions is Yes.
Anybody who questions his self-identification is denounced and ostracized. Possibly soon to be criminalized.
There are, BTW, a host of types of body dysphoria. There are people who believe they’re “really” another species. Angel, demon, elf, orc. Or Popeye the Sailor Man.

There are people who firmly believe their leg (or whatever) doesn’t belong to them and needs to be removed. They go to amazing lengths to get it amputated.

We all pretty much recognize these as mental illnesses, at least the second variety. But somehow drag sex into the situation and we lose our ability to think logically.
“Jazz’s incredibly supportive family” and there’s the problem.
Those Barebones names were pretty ambitious. lol
Coincidentally, just the other day, I was thinking about what I might’ve named three daughters, if I had had daughters instead of three sons. And Faith, Hope, and Charity came to mind. Not that I would’ve picked those names; years ago I had other names in mind for daughters. But they would’ve been nice names for girls. And now, here on this forum, coincidentally, today there’s a discussion on those types of names. Surreal.
Boys will be boys. Really.
Sometimes.... cowboys, policemen, firemen, wizards, action heros, race car drivers, Tarzan, Dudly Dooright, or Snidely Whiplash... Baseball Pitcher, Football Quarterback.. etc..
rarely a Princess but it does happen..
Won’t “she” be surprised when she doesn’t get her first period.
Not just what they expected, it's not what they've been led to believe is a perfectly normal thing, to be celebrated, and that will make them part of the in-crowd.
The HUGE movement in the media and academia (most anti-bullying campaigns are thinly veiled pro-homosexual indoctrination efforts) grows bigger every day.
Society is doing these kids absolutely no favors by encouraging them to revel in their mental disorders.
