In this raw, undated video from an unknown vessel we see how private security contractors aboard cargo ships might respond to a pirate threat.

We see at least two people opening fire on a skiff full of armed pirates who approach the ship.

These arms don’t get tossed. That photo looks photoshopped.

What a load of crap that is having to toss your weapons like that.

Indeed. But how is it NOT possible to hide a few AR-15s on a ship that size? The entire ship can't be searched to that kind of detail. A resourceful captain should be able to find dozens of possible hiding places. Hell, put them in a waterproof container and attach them to the hull well beneath the waterline. Or the same type of container hanging down inside the engine exhaust tower.

Or, as one commenter suggested...offload them onto a secure boat outside of port then retrieve them upon leaving.

The effective range of an RPG7 is over 400 Yards. The trusty M-16 seems a bit light for engaging ferals at a distance and who the hell wants'em close? Ma Deuce or my own RPG would make me happier. Paging Mr. Barrett!

BTW, looks like the "Security Boys" have been cleaned out of every waterfront bar from Nice to Naples. Plenty tough enough to gun these Fergusonite Sea Scouts. Hope the survivors don't show up in Maine as lobsta poachers.

OOPs, hope I didn;t give The Mombasa MF any ideas! BTW, scumbag site.

“I wonder how long before the Somalis start crying “disproportionate response.”

Well, if they followed the last posters advice and employ a couple of M-79 HEI rounds, the Somalis on the beach will just figure that their buddies had an unfortunate “boating accident.”

A .50 Barret(M107A1) would be perfect for the job of stopping pirates.

Just before the firing began I heard instructions for a “warning shot”. That was an excellent example of a proper warning shot!

interesting that the tone of the article indicates the indians have some kind of problem with what these security folks are doing....like they, and not the pirates, are a problem. i’ll bet the reason the coast guard left them alone to operate for months is that they like having them out there. it’s just the media and the officials higher up that have to act outraged

Governments, including our own, do not like private citizens and private companies protecting themselves against pirates, thieves, murderers, etc. The government wants you do wait passively until they show up with the chalk and crime scene tape. You can rest assured that they will thoroughly investigate your death.

more recent info:

On 10 July 2014, Justice P N Prakash of the Madras high court dismissed criminal charges filed against the crew and armed-guards of the MV Seaman Guard Ohio under the Arms Act. The judge explained the reasons for the detention of the vessel as well as dismissal of criminal charges by saying : “I hold that the anchoring of MV Seaman Guard Ohio within our territorial sea was out of necessity and their action is saved by the principle of ‘innocent passage’ contemplated by Section 4(1) of the Territorial Waters, Continental Shelf, Exclusive Economic Zone and Other Maritime Zone Act, 1976 and Article 18 and 19 of UNCLOS. Therefore, the crew and the security guards cannot be prosecuted for an offence under the Arms Act.”[66] Justice P N Prakash reaffirmed that both the Captain of the MV Seaman Guard Ohio and the supplier of 10 drums of diesel fuel are punishable under the Essential Commodities and Control Act for the improper purchase of subsidized marine fuel.[67]

Tamil Nadu police lodged an appeal with the Indian Supreme Court against the ruling handed out at the Chennai (Madras) High Court.[68][69] The crew of MV Seaman Guard Ohio already freed from police custody can obtain a NOC (No Objection Certificate) to leave Indian territory only after the case is fully settled in Indian courts.

So, what happens when these guys enter certain ports of call? What do they do with the weapons? In some of their ports, I'm sure there are copious rules and restrictions even if the populace outside of town is armed to the teeth. In any case, this is the way to handle open sea piracy.

I read an article recently that many ships are taking on Israeli mercenaries just before entering pirate infested waters. Then the mercenaries leave before the ship reaches port. That way they don't have any banned weapons onboard when the ship reaches port.
