Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), the House majority whip, acknowledged Monday that he spoke at a gathering hosted by white nationalist leaders while serving as a state representative in 2002, thrusting a racial controversy into House Republican ranks days before the party assumes control of both congressional chambers.
The 48-year-old Scalise, who ascended to the House GOPs third-ranking post earlier this year, confirmed through an adviser that he once appeared at a convention of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization.
That organization, founded by former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, has been called a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Oh gee whiz, the Democrats had Robert Byrd, KKK Klansman. Served 9 Terms in Congress...And that should be the reply back to the Democrats.
Yep they had Robert Byrd former Head of KKK. He had 9 terms in our Congress. Of course, he was a Democrat so that is ok.
Why should he not address such a group? If he were black, no mention would be made of his addressing the Negro Supremes or African Uber Allofus Society.
The biggest surprise is that there still are “White Nationalist” groups and, if they do exist, that they know how to spell to create invitations to an event like this.
He 'spoke'. So, what if he said, "YOU GUYS NEED TO KNOCK IT OFF!"
After 20 years of Jeremiah Wright, can there even BE controversy about associating with known bigots?
Is CAIR an Islamic Supremacist organization? Past quotes would appear to indicate “yes”.
The Pubbies should call out the NAACP for the racist group that it is. Also, what about calling out Hitlery for corresponding with Alinsky, while in college? Not to mention NYC Mayor Wilhelm’s socialist group ties.
Pubbies...crickets...
So what?
Is there not a Congressional Black Caucus? What would a list of their speakers and contacts show?
I’m sick of this s***.
That said, very poor judgement for a #3.
How many of the members of that group are actually FBI and SPLC infiltrators?
Called a hate group by a - hate group...
Only because the media will NEVER call them on it.
If you have a mob of media ready to descend on your every move, you will naturally be more cautious of criticism.
This would be a wonderful time for FOX to mention Grand Dragon Robert Byrd.
if this helps push the Boehner faction out, I am fine with it
The timing of this story is suspect. It’s almost as if it was kept quiet by opponents to put him in place and then humiliate him with the story. Even if this is no big deal, why did it not come up during his election?
But Obama inviting racist and community agitator, tax fraudster Sharpton many times to the White Hut is to be lauded.
So what? Obama has invited Sharpton to the White House numerous times, and MSNBC gave Sharpton his own TV show.
I’ve ran for state rep before. If somebody puts 10 people in the same room and invites you, you go.
Showing up and speaking to people isn’t an endorsement of their beliefs...unless you’re the type of person who says anything to get elected.
Believe me, you have to be willing to turn down votes while pressing the flesh, “I’m sorry to disagree with you, but I support coal (Israel, etc.).
I’m sure this isn’t a non-story: they will make hay. But. It’s a non-issue. Candidates in local races have to meet as many people as they can. That’s the process.
Same old rat behavior. Wasn’t John Ashcroft faulted for writing an article for some supposed southern hate magazine.
