The Food and Drug Administration announced on Tuesday that it would scrap a decades-old lifetime prohibition on blood donation by gay and bisexual men, a change that experts said was long overdue and could lift the annual blood supply by as much as 4 percent.
The F.D.A. enacted the ban in 1983, early in the AIDS epidemic. At the time, little was known about the human immunodeficiency virus, which causes the disease, and there was no quick test to determine whether somebody had it. But science and the understanding of H.I.V. in particular has advanced in the intervening decades, and on Tuesday the F.D.A. acknowledged as much, lifting the lifetime ban but keeping in place a more modest block on donations by men who have had sex with other men in the last 12 months.
In a statement, the agency said it had carefully examined and considered the scientific evidence before changing the policy. It said it intended to issue a draft guidance detailing the change in 2015.
The shift puts the United States on par with European countries like Britain, which adjusted its lifetime ban in favor of a 12-month restriction in 2011. Mens health advocates welcomed the move, saying that the ban was not based on the latest science and that it perpetuated stigma about gay men as a risk to the health of the nation. [...]
This is a major victory for gay civil rights, said I. Glenn Cohen, a law professor at Harvard University who specializes in bioethics and health. Were leaving behind the old view that every gay man is a potential infection source." He said, however, that the policy was still not rational enough."

The 12 month restriction is the same as a ban on donations by gay men. Where are you going to find a gay man who has not had sex with a man in 12 months? It would be much easier to find a straight man who has not had sex with a woman in 12 months.
Also directed donation within families will increase.
The faggots and their leftist pets want the rest of us to get AIDS.
It’s that simple.
Good to hear from you little J.
Thank you, Neoliberalnot. Every few years I have to take a break from FR for a while.....
Been even more overwhelmed than usual, too. :-)
Idle hands and all that; I never get idle time. It’s good for me.
I hope you had a good Christmas or Hanukkah if you’re Jewish.
How many? How many have died of AIDS?
According to Shilts (”And the Band Played On”), the CDC and NIH knew as far back as the late 1970s that AIDS was being spread through the homosexual bath houses. They tried to shut them down until they could understand how it was spreading.
It was also known that AIDS was being spread through blood donations made by the homosexual community. It took a massive effort to shut that down. Now, apparently, the homosexual “lobby” has finally won the right to donate AIDS-infected blood to unknowing recipients.
The homosexual lobby protested and sued viciously to remain open.
They were a main reason AIDS spread so rampantly through the 80’s and 90’s.
exactly
This could really be the end of the blood donation system
Homosexual men should give blood, but only to themselves, other homosexuals. I don’t want homosexual blood. My body. My choice.
WHO IS IDIOTIC ENOUGH TO BELIEVE ANY GAY MAN WHO SAYS HE HAS HAD ZERO GAY SEX FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR??????????
SERIOUSLY!!!!!!
The idiotic, it burns. Burns damn hard.
I’m totally against this, but the blood supply was likely already contaminated. How many homosexuals have denied their lifestyle choice during questioning before blood donation, probably a lot over the years.
I will not be accepting blood transfusions now
Boycott all blood donations.
I agree
Hahahahahahahahaha
This is absurd and hopefully will backfire on them. I have seasonal and tree nut allergies so I am therefore not allowed to give blood. I’m not suing anyone about this. I realize that due to these permanent ailments my blood is not viable for others.
Talk about selfish psychotics.
As much as 4%... are there even that many “gays” in the US?
Or, that none are already getting in?
The stupid there also is burning.
I can only figure that they believe they have good enough blood tests now, otherwise we’d be in major scandal territory already, let alone with the new rules.
I’m not sure they could have ever “stopped” it without tests.
For medical reasons this is not good, as the probability that homosexuals have infections, including today unknown infections, is higher than in groups that today can give blood. Note, this is based on statistics not on individuals.
This is a political decision that might jeopardize lives.
Which account for a wildly disproportionate percentage of of hepatitis and HIV infectees. The exact percentages vary, but it remains, in the U.S., that over 50-60 percent of new HIV infectees diagnosed are homosexual men. Figures for many other STDs such as syphillis and gonorrhea are similarly disproportionate. this minute percentage accounts for a majority of these sexually transmitted and bloodborne diseases, in no small part due to a combination of the nature of their behavior and the common nature of so many of them committing their behavior with so many partners.
